Got a match against VC (yea VC vs Vc this is going to be a loooooooooong one) but we are playtesting the 1999pt method of list making. So no lords and the standard restriction for heros so I'm stuck with three vampires.
I got no other rares and I hate ghouls. Normally I would use a lot of magic, but this time I'm making the list slightly worse on magic to attempt to get the others to see balanced lists work. No idea what he will use, but VC vs VC is not something I've tried before.
Vampire with Dark Acolyte, Avatar of Death, Lord of Dead, Helm of Command
Vampire with Dread Knight, Walking Death and Cursed Book
Vampire with Book of Arkhan, Dark Acolyte and Black Periapt
Skeletons x 19 with Champ & Standard with Dead Legion Banner (with vamp)
Skeletons x 24 with Champ & Standard with War Banner (with vamp)
Zombies x 20
Grave Guard x 25 with Standard & Champion with Banner of Barrows
Black Knights x 5 with Barding, Standard & Champion with Standard of Strigos (knight goes here)
Cairn Wraiths x 3 inc Tomb Banshee
If that top Vamp is your general I'm worried about how flimsy he is. Though playing VC youre not going to be facing any shooting so if you keep him out of CC you should be fine.
Your other big problem is that you can only take 0-1 Rare choice in an under 2000 point match. I would keep the Cairn Wraiths and possibly consider bringing in some more Black Knights in replacement for your Coach.
What I would actually do is change the Black Coach for a motherload of Ghouls because T4 when playing other VC makes a LOT of difference.
My other warning is (and allow me to be a killjoy here) prepare to not have any fun at all. I've never liked Army A vs Army A battles with any army but with VC it gets even worse because for the first 3 turns nothing will move and after that it will just be a matter of who falls over first...
Oh yeah forgot the rare limitation. Only got 3 Wraiths though. I've also only got 5 Black Knights though I may have some substitutes somewhere.
I hate ghouls.......but I also have NO ghouls apart from maybe 10 from the old edition. I've never used Crypt Ghouls and personally I'm more a fan of bones and rotting flesh when I think of undead rather than Quasimodo look-alikes!
Yes the general is flimsy but I thought no shooting (otherwise I'd normally kit him with AoN and WoBG) so I figured I could keep him out of CC relatively easily. The alternative however is to make my Dread Knight the general as hes armoured up nicely in a good calvary unit! He'll be in charge of hunting the other guys general as the only quick way to kill VC when ur VC is to nuke each others general!
If you have more GG models you could remove the Black Coach and take 2 units of 20 each instead of one lump of 25. Should give you a very nice lump of CC for whatever troops he throws at you.
The Cairn Wraiths will be the key I think. Just make sure you keep them out of the way of any Vampire he rolls for Gaze of Nagash on.
On second thought:
For the of the coach you COULD afford 2 units of 5 Dire Wolves and a unit of 6 Fell Bats which should make a nice mess of them - just make sure there is a Vampire by to IoN them because they will get hurt a bit by SCR. To pre-empt ANYBODY: YES THEY ARE INFANTRY - LOOK IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK
Also: Buy some Ghouls (11 poisoned attacks...)
Could do the dire wolves, though I've never had any luck with them. They just run up and die for been so weak, but I guess as I have no Fell Bats (don't tend to see a lot of lone mages or war machines here) they will do.
Cant remember if I have 30 or 40 GG in total, if I got 40 I'll do the 20's.
And no I hate ghouls!
Give all three vampires forbidden lore and take lore of light...extra damage against undead....with power stones...you can make them take a huge beating before the fights even start....or take lots of dipell scrolls to stop opposing magic....
Good luck, and may the dice gods smile upon you and smite your foes
Unfortunately it went badly for me, thouh mostly from bad luck. Deployment was flawed because i lost the roll by 1 and ended up with too much terrain on my side meaning my units were all spaced out. Then he managed to kill the Black Coach with a STR 7 Flying Hellsteed Hero Vamp which was a bit cheesy. On top of that he Vanhel Dansed his Wight King and Knights into my hidden Cairn Wraiths all because my dispel attempt rolled a 2 on his bound spell book. Once those two units died, i was dead from then. Not to mention that my spell cast rolls were unlucky as well.
Always the way, I lose to bad luck. Though I didn't realise just how sickly good the Hand of Dust spell is. Also getting a Level 4 vamp is pointless. I had 8 powerdice and 1 bound spell. He had 7 with 2 bound and his magic was better than mine! Saying that I was hindered because he changed the format from 1999pt to 2000pt at the last minute meaning I had two rare slots filled and forgot that I could have a 4th character.................ah well bad luck its something I'm cursed with!
I didn't say this at the time just hinted at it with other suggestions but I really think The Black Coach is a WASTE OF TIME.
So much has S7 these days that its really easy to just smash chariots to pieces.
To be honest, I feel sorry for you. VC vs VC are usually a lot down to luck and changing the format at the last minute was a bit crappy by your opponent.
Now go find some Ogre Kingdom to take your anger out on.
Nobody here plays them! Rather find some Empire or Orcs or Skaven, i.e the easy armies! However I'm faced with tough armies coz no one will play the handicapped ones! So prepare for Brets, Lizardmen, WoC and DE galore!
