After building my warriors of chaos and having them almost all painted I wanted to start planning my new army, Vampire Counts of course!
I looked at some standard builds and kind of built this off of them. It's still a few points short (200) and i'm not quite sure what to put in to fill the gaps. Any advice?
-wristbands of black gold
Necromancer-105 (rides corpse cart)
-Book of Arkhan
-Helm of Commandment
-Master of the Black Arts
-Sword of Kings
-Gem of Blood
-Banner of the Barrows-
3x Fell Bats-60

Welcome to the vamps!
Well first off your vamp lord has no protection whatsoever... he will be a nice large target to all shooting / warmachines on the board.... if you're going to have him flying about (I've never used the abyssal terror myself mind you, usually hellsteed or go all out with a zombie dragon if I want him flying around)... I would suggest the wristbands of black gold to protect vs. shooting... with redfury and infinite hatred you get a similar result to using the dreadlance for less points, except the hatred benefits your mount as well, so that it actually is better for less points... and gives you the ability to take some armor! - in fact dropping dreadlance will give you enough points to get flayed hauberk and the wristbands - throw in the balefire spike and for 5 more points than the dreadlance you have a 2+ AS and 3+ ward vs. shooting and a magical flaming lance....
I'd drop one of the nightmares for a necro and stick him on the cart... that allows both the necro and the cart to bunker for more protection... I normally only run one necro (if at all) but that's just personal preference... I'd keep the one with the book of Arkhan, and mount him on the cart in your group of 10 ghouls and run them behind the Grave Guard for a pretty reliable support unit.
I'd trade the necro with the rod of flaming death and nightmare for a wight king to go inside your grave guard unit for some extra punch, making him the BSB instead of your vampire... your support vamp could then have the helm of commandment and be bunkered behind the grave guard (with his necro friend), supporting the block with his magic, allowing everyone to march, as well as lending them WS6 which is going to increase their effectiveness tremendously, especially with the banner of the barrows (you'll be hitting most troops on a 2+)
Do you run your Grave Guard with HW/sheild or great weapons?
Looks like you have the makings of a really fun list.....
If you have the points after all your tinkering, wraiths with a banshee can be a game breaker against a lot of opponents (but you have to play them careful against some others), Terror, Ethereal multiwound skirmishers with a great weapon AND a shooting attack into combat that doesn't give an armor save! too good.....
Thanks for the tips man! Took a lot of it in. The cairn wraiths looked too good to pass down so i fit a unit of them in. Changed up my character configuration as well. Took the lord off of the terror and put in another corpse cart. This way i can completely nullify magic. Probably going to test it tonight. I'll tell you how it goes!
