I'm just picking up VCs, and before I start buying, I want to get a good starting list sorted out.
I want to try working on the IoN spam style, nerfed or not, as I just really like the concept of the hordes of the dead who will just not stay down.
Vampire Lord - 455pts
L3, Master of the Black Arts, Forbidden Lore: Vampires, Summon Ghouls, Cadaverous Cuirass, Wristbands of Black Gold, Sceptre de Noirot, Helm of Commandment
Vampire - 200pts
Red Fury, Sword of Swift Slaying, Flayed Hauberk
Necromancer - 100pts
Staff of Damnation, Ironcurse Icon
20 Skeletons - Lord bunker - 180pts
20 Skeletons - Necro bunker - 180pts
20 Ghouls - 168pts
20 Ghouls - 168pts
23 Grave Guard - Combat vamp goes here - 374pts
Full Command, Great Weapons, Banner of the Barrows
Varghulf - 1xxpts
VC are a dead army now (pun intended). No matter how much IoN you spam, they will stay down. With the updated number of attacks and crumble, entire units will generally be obliterated in the first turn. People argue that you can use magic against this but unless you have 12 dice every round, your magic is going to get shut down. The forums have been quietly lately except for the poor saps just starting VC. If you haven't started buying them yet, I'd turn to a different army.
Thanks for the input, but I play with friends and we aren't hyper competitive. This is my third army and I'm starting them primarily for the fun of it and the fluff.
Besides, there are several VC generals in round two of 'Ard Boyz.
You don't need 12 power dice to sustain your army. Not sure how you can get easely shutdown either with the vampire powers we have access to, but that's just me.
I would merge your units to make bigger mainstay units. 25 is a bare minimum for skeletons. If you need a bunker for a necro, 15 skeletons do a fine job, and they can lurk on flanks as well to strip ranks if need be. They don't need to be 20 strong if they don't intend to take on units strait up front. I am not sure why you have a scepter of noirot, since you do not have a zombie horde to fuel with it. 30 is a nice unit size for ghouls as well.
I would not get Forbidden Lore if you want to be agressive with IoN. Making him level 4 will make your invocations much stronger. Int he same vein, +1 to casting rolls is very nice when you couple it with Lord of the dead for a +6 to IoN on whatever your favoured unit is.
Your opponents will have a very hard time dispelling with a +2 deficit even if they have a wizard lord.
Wich one is the sword of swift slaying again? +1 attack is it?) I think with the amount of base attacks a regular vampire has, you are better off with infinite hatred and another nice 25 point vampire power (Walking Death, Avatar of Death is nice also depending on the budget. He won't get high strength (S5 is wonky for T4 units to gamble red fury) and other characters will counter him efficiently. Infinite hatred is a good medium, at half the cost. It also lets you use a great weapon.
Maybe look to cut one of your heroes in favour of a unit of blood knights. They hit like trucks and have staying power after the charge (S5 base). You can give them the Banner of Hellfire, and go after all the monsters you want (they take away regeneration, and the Treeman's wardsave!)
Not sure if you can fit it in without droping the varghulf. The varghulf does well when working with dire wolves or bats, which you do not have at the present. I always feel he is too fragile without some support.
ION has been nerfed but to be honest a well kitted lord vamp can keep ahead of any dispelling ur opponent tries (unless ur facing an Empire army with four warrior priests). Your lord should have Master of the Black Arts giving u 2D6+2 power dice every turn, not a bad start. Give him Dark Acolyte and 1+ magic level.
Then you can either take to raising ghouls or skeletons, really its your call. Trying to not to overprice him is a good idea so giving him the wristband and a hellsteed is cheep and keeps him alive.
Have to agree with Wolf_Pack that giving him Red Fury and S5 isn't a good combo. If you want the Red Fury go for Sword of Might, only 15points and ur at S6. Personally i always take Walking Death and Hatred for my combat vamps. It boosts your troop you join and re-rolling those darn 1,2 to hit is always a pleasure. And its every turn!
Don't know if any of you have tried this tactic but when i use my GG with GW they seem to be chopped up before i can land blows, so i take a lonely Corpse Cart with me. It's bound spell is innate so getting irrisistable force doesn't do squat damage on it and can give your GG ASF! With I3 they hit faster than orcs, ogres, lizardmen and the same speed as humans. Plus a re-roll to hit against I2 and 1 units thanks to your ASF.
