Phew so fantasy is quite different than 40k ha I decided to take the plung and start fantasy because well it just looks fun. vampire counts models look great so I bought a big lot of them on ebay + mournful knights they are so niceeeeeeeeeeeeeee erm anyways... just wondering how this list is coming. I dont know about manfred I have a bunch of other vamps and necromancers too. about 50 skelies 50 zombies 30 ghouls(need more!) 8 black knights which Id love to also fit in the list but I am just not sure. anyways any help would be appreciated, hopefully I will be able to get in a game next week since the models were shipped out today!! thanks
ehh actually my points are off by 23 I think...hmm I wanted to add in a helm too. there is so maynt things to think about with this army its mind blowing. Im used to power weapon or powerfist haha. I dont hae my codex on me right now but I was thinking of trying to fit in the banner that gives 4+ ward to my blood knights. Not sure if it is worth the points though. And manfred is also a big unknown to me as of right now. I guess ill have to play test and see I just think having a 5+ for magic is pretty good and Id like to have a decent magic phase. If I fail a spell with him then I will cast some with the necromancer/vampire.when I originally wrote the list I had the drakenhof banner on my wight king but decided it was too many points for a equivlent of 40ks feel no pain which almost all my blood angels get. Anyways I guess I dont expect to get much feed back here but I really want to get some more synergy down in this list. If it helps at all I like to get into close combat and rip stuff up, I dont know why but otherwise I am very bored in my games. I saw a combo today which I thought was pretty crazy if not just unfair is the forbidden lore of the beast or something and turning a vampire into a chimera and also having ethereal...thought I might try that sometime just for kicks. Anyways I am rambling, just want some feedback. Anything helps, thanks!
Fear not my fellow brother of the night, you are not alone in the shadows!
to get around this, we typically follow one of the following formats;
a) ghoul spam. lots of big ghoul units (think 30-40) along with the ghoulkin power which allows for a pre-game move. support this with a grave guard block or black knight deathstar and things like vargulfs, black coach and/or wraiths.
b) bloodbus. the nickname for the following set-up;
lord w/red fury, dread knight, infinite hrated, blood drinker, 4+ ward save.
wight king BSB w/drakenhof banner
8-10+ blood knights. full command + razor standard.
pretty much a point and shoot approch... not much will live through that onslaught. but it can get boring pretty fast.
c) the 'i don't give a crap & i'll use what i want!'.
pretty much, this is where you say, to hell with our competitve builds, i don't care if i lose more than i win, i want "my army"!
i personally tend to follow this approch, since i like my theme and it involves lots of skellies units (which are highly over-priced crap), supported by light magic. when my magic works, my army does terribad things to the enemy. if my magic sucks, well, my grave guard will be the only unit doing much!
the only thing almost all VC's players totally agree on is to avoid the following units like the plague;
- dire wolves
- bat swarms
those are our 3 worst units, and you should never pay pts for them!
anyways, i hope this helps,
Thanks that really helped a lot I watched some fantasy battles this weekend tomb kings vs chaos. And saw how crap skeletons are.. hmm guess ill have to just have a drakenhof gg and probably go with the suggestions for the blood knight. Now I jsut neeed to buy some more ghouls. Cuz that power where they have like a scout move would be pretty cool. Kinda wishi went with chaos their warriors seemto be really goood maybe I'm mising something tho
don't feel that you absolutely have to follow our one power-build... sure it's beyond gross and is one of the top competitive builds out there, but it's a very boring experience IMHO. it's basically nothing more than pushing your 3 hoard units forwards, charging & throwing a bucket of dice.
skellies for example can indeed work, despite how massively over-pointed they are! light magic is key; it nullifies almost every single weakness in the skeleton, all he needs on top of the WS/I boost is a spell like wyssan's wildform or enchanted blades. (lores of beasts or metal respectively)
skeletons are simply a more random choice because they absolutely need magical buffs to make them hit decently. ghouls on the other hand are a quick and simple, decently reliable hitty core unit who need few buffs to work.
as for warriors seeming to be unstoppable? well, keep in mind that they pay ALOT of pts for their abilities! while warriors can happily slaughter their way through most rank and file infantry, it takes them a turn or two since they're almost always outranked by their opponents. (who thus gain the steadfast bonus and are far less likely to break)
plus, like the other MEQ's in 40k, dropping even just a small handful of warriors can really hurt their units...
you'll find that in fantasy, every army tends to have at least one 'broken' or 'incredably cheesey' build/s! the character & magic item combos are open to far more abuse in fantasy as opposed to 40k, and typically it's harder to find a reliable counter to such units!
for example, almost nothing stands upto our grave guard deathstar! it's basically 1000-1200pts of pure 'i win'. but a single casting of spells like dreaded 13th, dwellers below, pit of shades or purple sun will cripple the unit! but armies without access to the loremaster abilities and/or those specific lores can have almost no way to deal with this unit...
sam goes for a unit of 30+ tzeentch chosen w/FotG's supported by 2 warshines. they're almost assured of getting the stubborn & 4+ ward save, which then becomes a 3+ ward due to their mark...
the way to really deal with this kind of abuse, is to either try and get the other guy to try something different, or else simply refuse to play him! people who rely on these gimmiky, 'i win' lists tend to have a hard time finding a game after a while... it's supposed to be fun for both players, so why put up with gits when you honestly don't have too?!!
