Hi, thought I'd see what feedback I ca get on my list. This is my first Sylvanian list, and I hardly ever play fantasy, but I'd like to get it on again
Lord, lvl3, xtra hw, ring of night, summon wolves, dispel scroll, black periapt
thrall wolf form, summon wolves, gw, ha, shield
thrall bsb, flayed hauberk, sword of might
27 grave guard, full command, drakenhof banner
8 drakenhof templars, full command, war banner
10 levy, full(!) command
20 millitia, full command
2 spirit hosts
1 bat swarm
7 direwolves, doom wolf
I know there are better armies out there, but I like to keep it fluffy as well, and Stanislav(lord) rules an outlying province, hence the lack of levy and millitia, so he has to rely on his personal bodyguard when he goes to war to "recruit".
Well, one thing that strikes me as odd is that you don't have a single Earthbind Bloodline Power. That stuff is essential for the Sylvanian magic defence, especially due to it's low cost.
Use Light, Beasts, Metal instead of Heavens
NecroLords: Use at least one Death Mage
Brets: Use Peasants&Damsels
Skaven: Don't use Skryre SAD
well, I've got the drakenhof banner, so that covers the grave guard well. as for the others, one is in a unit of skellis (which hopefully will get much larger), so just let them die, whilst the other is running loos with the wolves, and can either manouvre out of LOS, or slam into combat relatively fast. either way, I'm relying on two summon wolves with the banners double to take out warmachines or keep lone wizards occupied here, so if the wizards are in units, the wolves can outmanouvre them, and stay out of harms way. Besides, I want the other stuff here, so no points for earthbind. not to mention the complete waste of points against all the armies in our club that have just two scroll caddies, or no magic at all
Well, if your army is structured for fluff then not a huge amount of suggestions can really be made.
I think the flayed hauberk would be far more effective on the fast thrall, you know he is going to be out there and vulnerable and if your opponent has had any experience facing these guys he will be a priority target for shooting. Hell, one time I had to hide mine in a huge chunk of zombies because his wolves got blasted into oblivion in the first turn, and the zobies took a beating before he was able to leap out and deal his nasty death. His shield is a bit wasted, because you can't use it with the great weapon and if you put the hauberk on him it won't do anything in shooting either.
Bat swarms are pretty crap, they're too slow to go hunting so they basically do the same job as spirit hosts except not as effectively. I'd switch them for fell bats.
The doom wolf is also useless, the points of a wolf for one extra attack? Why not spend those same points and get another wound on a new wolf? Ditch him IMO.
Musicians.. Well, you probably know the logic. Undead never flee anyway, so they are a bit expensive for what they do.
If you want a bsb, I would be using a wight for it. The thrall pays extra points for his killing ability, which you are hampering with a banner. Use thralls for killing, and wights for bsb. If it suits your fluff, keep it though.
thanks for your input, I am open to chaging my list, only not to make it "best uber leet". I t still has to remain a army you might see in "real warhammer world"
As for the hauberk, well, I've been thinking about it. maybe, I'll have to do a test battle to see how it works out.
as for a few other things.
bat swarms. I think you may be right. I'll see what else I can get for them. just seems so right to have bats in the sylvanian army (fell bats I don't have, so can't use them)
Musicians, well, a while back, when I did play VC a bit, I can hardly count the number of times the musician has helped my opponent tip the battle in his favour, so I swore never to leave home without...
oh, as for the shield on the thrall, it was for shooting when he didn't have the hauberk...
and the doom wolf, I don't think he is that useless. first, it's an extra attack at the front, and all attacks help right? besides, when facing someone with, say, daemons, dragons or other such nasties, I can leave the vampire at back with his sister(bsb), and send the wolves off charging/be charged whatever, and I can chellenge it with the doom wolf. It will get splattered, but instead of all those wounds killing wolves, and then killing the rest in combat resolution, he just gets the resolution from overkill...which should leave a few wolves, and I tie him up, giving me time to manouvre some units in place. or so is my plan anyways
and, final point, the bsb. well, I'll admit, I've written some fluff for her, as I converted the old Isabella model to carry the bsb (the one from Arkhans chariot, carrying it where she held the cup), and she just looks cool. as for the fighting ability, she now strikes with 3 attacks, at S6, and I6 with a 1+ save. she just happens to be the bsb as well. and I'm not too fond of wight kings (if only the killing blow had been substituted with rending!).
so, if anything, maybe dropping the bsb altogether then. but what to kit her out with then? if the wolf thrall gets the hauberk, she's gonna need heavy armour at least. but what would you recommend then?
My secondary thrall after the fast one always take spectral attendants, it has stopped opponents spells for me countless times. Then just earthbind, and either great weapon or second hand weapon depending on who you are facing. And of course heavy armour, in a unit that will make it safe enough in most cases.
If you don't want spectral attendants, you could throw summon wolves on it since you would be losing that on the other thrall for the hauberk.
Bat swarms have the advantage of skirmishing and protect flanks really well. Also, I use them to intercept enemy swarms, which are a huge pain in the arse.
There have been times that I wished I'd taken a musician. I've lost several combats jsut because of it was a tie, until I realized I'd not taken a musician. I always take them on Grave Guard or Black Knights, because it's cheaper than losing a model due to a draw. I leave them off of zombies and sometimes skeletons.
I don't think the doom wolf is worth it. I'd rather have another model, which means another wound, which they often lose in combat or to missile fire. They thin out quick.
Unlike many VC players, I like the BSB. But I have to admit that I don't take one too often. Not suffering another wound is nice, especially after a few rounds of combat. It pays itself back. Fluffwise, I think the BSB is great.
Are you sure the points are right? It doesn't seem like a lot, but then again, I don't play Sylvanian. Haven't even tried it out.
the points come out at 1999 excactly.
and I'm still convinced the doom wolf has his uses (at least in our club, this is not a tournament list)
as for the spectral attendants, that's alot of points to waste against a scroll caddy army, og which there are a few where I play. I would really like it, don't get me wrong, I just can't justify it's hefty points cost, weighed up against 2x summon wolves, against the drakenhof banner, which will give to to nice units of dire wolves to go harassing the enemy.
as for earth bind...well, maybe. I could exchange it for the weapon on the bsb thrall. argh! the choices...
well, hopefully, I'll get a battle going on on sunday, so we'll see how it fares, and either I'll triumph, or I'll shamefully admit you were right
