This is my first try at a VC army list. I have collected Tau and Dwarfs for some time and now I want to add the undead to the boxes in the cupboard. The list that follows is a loose concept list. I would be very glad if people could point out potential problems or flaws. I would particularly appreciate if people would take the time to explain why the choices I have made are good or bad. You will notice an absence of detail and this is because I have not selected specific equipment. I have instead chosen what I feel is a cohesive army.
Ok Here Goes:
Lahmian Vampire Lord riding a Nightmare.
Level 3 Magic and various goodies.
Vampire Thrall Battlestandard
on foot with ethereal cloak so immune to all but magic attacks. (Independent character...)
160 or so points.
20 Skeleton Warriors
Hand Weapons and shield full command.
about 225 points
20 Zombies with ldr and mus
20 Zombies with ldr and mus
15 Black Knights
(Vampire Lord in this unit.)
around 430 points
16 Black Knights
full command, screaming banner
around 470 points
This all comes to around 2000 points.
Any suggestions folk? Skelies in the middle flanked by the zombies and then Black Knights either both on one wing or one at either end of the line.
I don't have much time for a lengthy reply, but here's my immediate reaction to the list.
Not nearly enough magic. You need at least two, preferably three, attempts at IoN per magic phase.
Drop the lord to a count. Add two level 2 necros. IMO, this is pretty much mandatory for any VC list other than Necrarch.
The knight units are WAY too big. Two units of 10 is still REALLY big. If you really want knights, I'd say use two units of 6-8, one with the war banner and the other with the banner of the barrows.
The army lacks range. You need flyers and/or dire wolves to make the list work.
But more than anything, you need summoning power, and that means more magic.
Drop the nightmare. I won't write out my opinion why. You can find it in my VC tactica which is indexed in the VC forum. The points are better spent elsewhere IMO.
I'm off to look at the VC tactica right now. Look out for an update.
Thank you for your comments. Being a newcomer to the VC list I simply chose units that looked good on the table. Luckily everything is still in the boxes so I can happily take it whatever I want back to GW and exchange it where necessary.
If anyone else has any thoughts I would be grateful.
so I have spent some time having a look at the Army List and I have decided to make a few amendments. I am not listing the equipment for some of the characters as I feel that this can change depending on the foe. However the list as it appears is the way that I imagine fielding the rest of the force.
Please, Please, Please tell me what you think. Thanks people.
Ok here goes.
Nightmare and Level 3 Magic
100 points of kit.
Heavy Armour, Barded Nightmare, Battle Standard.
Both in a 16 man strong unit of Black Knights
Full command, barding and the banner of the barrows.
2 Dispel Scrolls
Leading a unit of 29 skeletons
6 across and 5 deep. basic kit, full command
25 skeletons, basic kit, full command
25 skeletons full command, basic equipment
5 Dire Wolves
5 Dire Wolves
For heaven's sake. Please say something if you read this, even if it is just "err Hi just saying something like you asked..."
I wouldn't put my lord in such a small unit of GG. IMO that's asking for trouble as they can't be resurrected and your lord could quickly find himself alone due to combat resolution losses.
I'd make one big unit of GG for either him or the wight lord, and then I'd put whichever one isn't with the GG into a unit of skellies to give them some close combat support.
I really appreciate the thoughts. I guess this really is a quiet part of LO. Mind you I can't complain as one of the chief reasons I chose the VC is because they are one of the most unpopular armies. They also have such great opportutnites when it comes to conversions and appropriating miniatures from other ranges.
My general is from LOTR...
I guess I am a little surprised however that you are worried about a unit of 18 Black Knights making losses to combat resolution. I figured that with a standard, +2 Rank bonus, unit strength of 32, Ld 10 and a Battle Standard the only unit in my army that can't benefit from the IoN would also be the toughest nut to whittle down in the first place.
I want to use the banner that offers a 5+ ward save against all missiles too as this would really help protect the unit when it is not in combat.
I envision this being a true VC list. A truly horrible VC Lord surrounded by her popular minions, ie the one's who succembed to her entrancing ways in life and now serve her in death, backed up by a host of skeletons produced by the sycophantic Necromancer who still hopes to get in her knickers some day before all of his flesh sloughs off as a result of his hobby...
I am going to post some photos as the host has been purchased an I am starting to assemble and convert the evil loveliness even as we speak...
Watch this space.
Oops! I was thinking units of GG, not BKs! I should read closer. I've seen really big units of BK do well, so go for it!
VC is actually rather active most of the time...it slowed down after the server change when, I think, some regulars lost their way to LO. Hopefully, it'll pick back up!
I know what you mean about LO going awol. I spent a good couple of weeks typing in the URL only to get re-redirected to some hostig website. I was so relieved when the site re-appeared. I have really started to enjoy the forums here.
I want to get more involved with posting images of current projects too. I definitely prefer the hobby side of Warhammer to actually playing and I love playing the game.
I really think this list will serve as a nice start to VCs. I can play a few games at 2000 points and then start to experiment when fancy takes me with other variations. I suspect the VC may be due a bit of an overhaul so perhaps we will see some new miniatures at some point in the future.
Either way I look forward to getting my units painted up and kicking some living behind from time to time.
Thanks for your comments
I have been assembling skeletons for several days now and I only have 80. They are so hard to clean up properly before assembly... So spindly and thin.
I have started to day dream about getting some Zombies instead. I would use a 50/50 mix of empire militia and zombie pieces which would get me around 40 Zombies. I still have a box of skeletons that I can trade in so...
Could anyone make some suggetsions. If I drop a unit of 25 skeletons from my list. What would you buy. I already have Black Knights, Dire Wolves, and loads of skeletons...
Thoughts are welcome. I have even thought about doing a Black Coach. That would be an awesome conversion and I have a WarWagon in my bits bos that could serve as the beginnings of a Black Coach...
Go on tell me what you think I should go for...
