Welcome to Librarium Online!
I have a 40k ork army  they are cool
but everytime i go into my local games workshop i cant take my eyes off the fantasy stuff!
I was thinking about getting orks and goblins but they seem alittle to popular so now i'm thinking about vampire counts but i dont know where to start!
Well i think the joy of runing an army that never runs away and causes fear to boot is why you should collect Vampire Counts.
I think a 20 or 30 zombies 20 skellies and a necromancer would be a good core to a starting army.

im gona tell you the same thing I tell everyone who asks me what army is the best, pick on that you will 1. have fun playing 2. end up rooting for when you watch things like movies and such. If you like watching movies that are big on zombies eating people and find yourself rooting for the vampire to bite the girl and kill the hunter then VC is the army for you.
Badass Vampires for characters who, unlike most fighting-ready characters, also cast magic. Unbreakable troops that all cause fear or terror. The unique ability to end the game with more troops than you began it. VC is a long-time successful army and will continue to be so.
It's a very reliable army, most of the times you know how a fight is going to end before even starting it. This allows for an extremely tactical play, it's not something like:"IF my Squighoppers don't roll a 1 for animosity, IF they manage to move in contact with the enemy, IF they kill at least 4, IF the enemy breaks, then I'll do this and that...".
You still rely on the luck factor, but not as much as other armies, and that's a feature I love. You simply deploy the army the way you like and your units will always obey to your orders, they'll never run away screaming like mad, they'll never be scared etc etc.
VC's magic is outstanding, most of the times you'll simply summon zombies, but offensive spells are really nasty.
I have an O&G army, but when I win a game it's usually a matter of a lucky Warpath, Waaaagh, random movement and so on (same thing applies to losses). Winning a game with Vampire Counts mostly depends on army composition, deployement and strategy imho.

RecklessFable's Journey to Mediocrity (Painting an IG army)
I've been addicted to World of Tanks lately and neglecting my IG... But it is so... much... fun!
...your title is insane....
It should be 'why shouldn't i collect vampire counts?'
Vampire counts rock! I collected them for about 3 years, amassed a 5000 point horde (shudders at memories of painting 200 zombies). They kick butt. I never lost a battle with them.
They are on of the most reliable armies (if not the most) in the game becuase:
1) They are the only army that can have more troops at the end of the battle than they did at the start
2) Their magic is just to die for.
3) They're characters are second to none. Sure they can be beaten in combat, and they can be beaten at magic. But nobody can weild BOTH to such a degree they are almost masters at both.
4) They're models are awesome
5) They have some of the most well thought out and wonderful fluff.
They are completely rock solid, and have so many different options available.
But in answer to your now improved title ()
1) They have no shooting whatsoever so they have to be in combat to be of any use
2) They are extermely reliant on the general, so you can assume everybody will try and take down your 500 point vampire
3) They suck so much at combat it's almost funny. Snotlings can show a skeleton who is boss.
4) Their magic, while strong will be unreliable, and most of the time enemies will try to dispel. IF you can't summon more troops to that dying zombie unit then say goodbye to it.
hahaha cool thanks for the comments
and i have to say since i have heard these comments and looked them up in more detail, i WILL start making an army. Although i'm going to look at my 40k orks more at the minute.
And who doesn't like the old Dracula stuff? Vampire Counts are your way to make your own vampire and fluff
I started with Dark Elves and then expanded to Vampire Counts. Both armies have different playing styles, so one doesn't get bored.
And for the core army, a Necromancer is necessary to be the general, since until you can get a lord choice Vampire Count or Lord, you can't have a Vampire as a General. Unless you go Necrarch and get a Thrall with the Nehekhara's Noble Blood Bloodline Power. Fun occasionally, I tell you. :w00t:
On top of everything previously said, I love VC for the fact that you can use anything in the WHFB range in your army.
Using just VC models makes for a boring look IMO. VC are really easy to spruce up. I needed two regiments fo zombies, so intead of buying two zombie boxes, I bought a Zombie Box and a Box of Empire Militia. Just bits bash them, which I think is fun as hell and you'll have zombies that have character. A zombie with a blunderbuss?!?! C'mon, who doesn't want one?
Same goes for everything else. My Black Knights are High Elf Dragon Princes and Dark Eld
Cold One Knights,
Another lil fun thing is after you beat someone, buy a model from that army and convert it into a zombie. The front ranks of two of my zombie units are from armies I've beat. Ooooh does it piss people off. :-D
