Heya guys, my vampire counts army 1000 points is done and fought 10 + battles using the famous Von Carstein and now that i'm about to go for the 2250 for a turnament i was wondering. How can i make a count that can do some magic and some melee.
The base build i was thinking about was a Vampire count on a nightmare and i'm looking over the magic items list, and i just cant find any good way to armour him up without loosing his ability to cast spells. I wonderd if the ring would work, but then i feared he would be unable to kill enough in melee focusing on saving his Tush.
So how do i make this guy work? It seems the blooddragon count is just better because they can cast spells in armour but i just like the von carstein trall with wolf form and great weapon charging from the lines of skeletons into chariots, mages, skimishers and even far away war-machine crews solo.
That is a good idea man. the stupidity is not that bad with a 9 leadership. Any reason why he should not have a lance rather then a great sword if he is mounted? It is only the trall i want on foot, not the count.
But a good start for sure
any other surgestions?
If he's mounted, then don't use a great weapon as you only get the +1 to str and +2. If you really want str 7, then take the lance. Go ahead and use a barded nightmare to get a 5+ armor save, too. Against str 3 troops, it gives you a little more assurance along with the ward save.
Personally, I don't like my count running out ahead of the army, but if you do want him on that nightmare, give him the aura of dark majesty so your troops can still march.
Vampires don't really need any magic weapons or abilities to make them nasty in combat. SUre you can make them nastier, but they already kick ass. That 1 less power dice for blood dragons really can effect your magic phase, it doesn't sound like much but if you don't think you're magic through it can really mess it up.So how do i make this guy work? If you want to counter that then Sword of Unholy power can give you back the missing dice.
Really, if you're looking for a balance between magic and combat then the only bloodlines you want to avoid are BD and necrach, which are the 2 extremes.
Strigoi are just as good in combat as BD, but their thralls are more vulnerable. They can't be mounted either which might hurt your plans.
Lahmia, though they look weak are better for protracted combats, where their high I means they're more likely to strike first, plus most of their bloodline powers are about not getting hit. They also have one of the best blood line powers in Innocence Lost.

Von Carstein's are only for people smart enough to see the value of an expanded command radius and summoning wolves behind the enemy's artillery unit, sorry.
I dont agree prince. One of the best things Von Carstein can do is having a chariot killing trall with a great weapon and wolf form. Also they can use armour such as the flayerd hauberk making them great.
The Von Carsteins are able to kick ass in melee as well as magic and i love what they can do, being alowed to use magic items (unlike Strigoi), armours (unlike lamia and necrarch) and still being able to cast magic as well as all but the Necrarch.
The summon wolves thing isent that good because on a good day you make 3, so even best case senario you will have a hard time killing a dwarven warmashine crew, not imposible but hard.
The aura of dark majesty rocks though, because it allows you to use dire wolfs better since they can be placed at both corners of the board and till be able to marchmove the first turn.
All i fear when using a von carstein count is that he will be killed to easy should i use it's great combat ability, and i now se that you cant give him all that much normal armour save but a 4+ ward is still okay. I considert the ring but then i would be unable to get Dark majesty that i love so much, thus the question, how can i protect him and still be able to cast spells. So far the crown is the best choice.
Well Ive been on the recieving end of von carstein (not impressed) =)

I field Von Carstein regularly. Their powers are not as apparent as some of the other bloodlines but the walking death, aura of dark majesty and a ward save make for a good count, I usually take a count and thrall both on foot, with great weapons. You will usually find people don't bother to attack the count because he is hard to kill so striking second is not such a big deal to gain st7. I think Von Carstein are very powerful and good for tourney lists or those where you don't know who or what you are playing.
Arms are an instrument of evil, No measure for thoughtful men until there fail all other choice but sad acceptance of it.
