Having come relatively late to VC's and having a few boxes of skellies and zombies lying around for ages it's time to dust them off and get some games going. So, my question for the esteemed forum goers is this:
What combination of heroes do you find most effective at 1000pts?
I know that like other armies VC's can really struggle at low point games however that is, unfortunately, the size we are limited to due to a number of reasons (time/money/apocalypse).
I was thinking of going with 2 necromancers and a wraith/wight. However, I was also considering being quite nasty and going all out magic and then rely on combat res and sheer numbers to carry me through although I'm not sold on this.
Dear Exarch Tomo
First of all, welcome amongst us childen of the night .
Now concerning your question. I'm not that keen on using three heroes up to 1K. As one has to spend nearly half ones credits on them (e.g. three tooled up necromancers will cost you between 400 and 450 points).
Moreover I find using three necromancer in a 1K list quite boring playwise. So, I suggest running 2 heroes is more then enough. And that doesn't mean necromancers per sé. Why not using following combo:
-necromancer/blood dragon thrall
-necromancer/von carstein thrall
Though I play Lahmia myself, I don't recommend a Lahmia thrall, as she is quite too vulnerable having no armour save at all. On the other hand, striking first (innocence lost) should never be underestimated. The same argument goes for the necrarch thrall.
Anyway, I hope this helps you out a bit.
i think lorddraahk is right about playing with three necromancers is boring but Exarch Tomo
said the word effective and they are effective .
i disagree that playing with three hero's aren't that good because they are really good our character's. so i always thake my full hero slot . evn on bigger points.
my list is on the forum already. take a look at my character choises there
they are for playing fun not effective maybe they are but you get my point.
i only play with a wraith in my ' go-cart ' black coach .
i go for blood dragon thralls or stregio.
most effective for compettitive are three necromancers and a bunch of skelletons
Thanks for the replies guys - only reason I wanted to go 3 necros is that I usually don't play heavy magic - at most I have a scroll caddy in my other armies (Brets and Wood Elves) - as for effective, i don't mean like killings swathes of troops but instead being versatile or allowing enough versatility to responds to various changes in the game.
Therefore i was leaning towards 2 necros for summoning power and either a wigh lord or a wraith. Was leaning towards the wraith because it will be largely untouched by mainstream troops and should provide enough kills to win on combat res
The following combination worked well for me in my 1000pts tourney list:
Necromancer Lvl2 (General): 145pts
Cloak of Mist and Shadows
Necromancer Lvl2: 150pts
Book of Arkhan
Von Carstein Thrall: 134pts
The Flayed Hauberk
These three heroes work well together, giving you a balance of attack power and magic at 1000pts. The total list can be found here:

as always, GN's comments are spot on and his choice of hero's are considered to be the optimum to take at anything from 1k-2k
As for not wanting to spend so many points on characters at 1k, VC armies NEED their characters. Without them the army has no potential, maybe they are sacrificing troops for heroes, but you must remember that their heroes summon more troops
"I am the architect of fate!"
I belief you didnt' really read my post quite thorough.
My advice was under following premise: list up to 1K.
In this case I find 3 characters relatively too much.
On the other hand, I do concur with you in the case when lists are between 1K+ and under 2K.
Bu it all comes down to this.
Does one want to win by all means necessary, or does one wants to have fun?
I must say that 3 necros in 1000pts is devastating.
At the end of my second game ever in WHFB with a 1000 pts 3 necro 60 zombie 5 black knights army I had MORE zombies at the end of the game than I began with.... And on turn 4 I had his ENTIRE army fleeing!!!
But it was a easy win due to me having more dispel dice than he had power dice and I also had 2 bound spells, making for a magic heavy list...
Granted, the characters cost a lot of points, but the army relies on the characters. No fancy ASF-Elves or the like. Skellies and Zombies work things with combat res, not amazing stats.
And gingerninja's character setup is pretty solid. I use quite often the same type, although occasionally I leave the Cloak home and take something else, not in a campaign though. The Cloak is pretty handy when you don't know what you're up against.
And Necrarch Thralls with Nehekhara's Noble Blood are, though expensive, a good choice for a "middle class" fighter.
