I know there are rumours in the proper forum, but I do not see people here discussing the new VC things to arrive in March. In lieu of this then, I thought I'd step in.
What do you all think of the minis?
What about the "rules" that have been leaked?
What would you love to see or miss?
I'm not a VC player, though I admit I am soooo sorely tempted by them. And always have been (VC will always equal Von Carstein in my mind). But, I'll admit the new vamp minis I really do not like. Especially the baldy ones. That's not Von Carstein! I know that vampires faces change at will into "attack mode" if you will, but I never expected them to shed their hair as well. More aerodynamic? Bleh! I hope to be able to make some decent vamp minis from somewhere... erm.. should I ever do them, that is.
I am also not that keen on all these new power-ups that have occurred. Such as the X model/unit makes everything strike first. Why? How? I don't like that idea, as said in the rumours it smacks of a GW quick fix (those universal things they decide to add in instead of looking for a proper balance re: rending in 40K I believe was the comparison). Undead are.. well.. dead! They should not be striking first against anything really. If it was a spell that could be cast, or applied to the general only then OK, yeah I'd dig it. But it seems to be a lot of units have the rule. Or are at least rumoured to.
I also dislike that the ghouls now are ranked. That is just wrong. They do not look good ranked and shouldn't be, it goes against all background for them. And now, they loose their great ability to a) shield and b) flee as I have read that they will be counted as being undead too.
OK. So it turned into a rant, but although I am not a VC gamer, I never saw that they needed too much fixing. Just a few things here and there (ie points cost etc) but I think GW have that problem of quick fix syndrome.
Kuffy, the grumpy dwarf. (note: is not dead)
I agree about the vampires, I won't be getting many of those. Same with the new wolves and ghouls, they just don't work for me. And the knights of Blood Keep have some silly poses for their mounts, so not sure about them.
The new skeletons however, I love those. Too bad I don't need any more of them. And I've never used Grave Guards before, but now I think I'll have to get a unit of those, they are very nice. Same with Corpse Cart and Varghulf, sweet models. So I'm about 50-50 on the new range, some stuff I really like, and some I don't.
About the always striking first: agreed that it seems like a quick-fix. It's not all-powerful for the elves, despite the doomsaying, but it could have been done much more elegantly than granting ASF to all HE. As for the Corpse Cart, I heard some speculation somewhere that it might be like a bound spell, don't hold me to it but if thats the case I don't see a problem.
I do love the rumored rule of every vampire model enabling others to march within 6". I will finally be able to do some serious flanking! The new VC looks to be more mobile, without having to rely on Danse Macabre, and being a close combat army it is needed. We won't be as fast as elves for example, but we get more options in deployment, and I love it.
Finally Ghouls. Yeah, ranked and undead, probably won't be using them much, but hey, I don't like the new models anyway... This is pure speculation from me, and not a rumour of any kind, but I would like to see some rule attachment to the undeads, allowing certain units and characters to flee as a reaction. Something like "awareness", not all undeads are mindless automatons, and some of them should be able to flee. Maybe not so much core choices, but characters and some specials/rares. A vampire has more than enough tactical awareness and skill that he should be able to flee in the face of overwhelming odds. It would present some problems with Immune to Psychology and rallying, but it must be possible to incorporate something like this.
Thats it for now.
Also I'm intriged by what people think of the prices that have been released so far, the increase in cost for rank and file troops is a bit of a put off with VC needing so many, and the 70 euro listed price tag for 5 KOTBK is a bit much, only 10 euros less than a battalion box, I know they're full metal but still. I was planning on converting all my models from empire combined with undead kit a while back, with this new pricing I'm wondering if I shouldn't have in the first place.
aut viam inveniam aut faciam / I'll either find a way or make one.
Overall, I like how they are adding some variety to the list. I will enjoy trying out new units in with my old ones, as my current VC army is old and has gotten a little stale and boring. Sure I can win, but it has lost its spark for me. With fresh new ideas and a few great looking models I will happily and excitedly bring my dust-covered undead out of retirement.
I don't like the new vampires either... I probably won't be getting any. My list is usually fairly necromancer-heavy anyway, so I hope the 1 rumored new model is good.
As for the other things, I love most of them. Especially the corpse cart, ghouls, and grave guard. They all look awesome, and come March I'll definitely be dropping $100-200 and expanding my army. The only things I really don't like are the dire wolves (which I don't use anyway) and skeletons (which I have plenty of). Also, it's stupid how GW's new thing is to sell boxes of 10 plastic models. Oh, I like the Knights of Blood Keep a lot too.
The rules I've seen so far look good -- I'm not sure how effective a Corpse Cart will actually be in my army, but it's a damn cool model and I'll be getting one anyway. :C From what I've seen of the Blood Knights, I'll definitely be getting some of those.
Overall I'm excited, and think GW did a great job.
Firstly, a little disclaimer. Although I'm a fan of Vampire Counts, I kind of prefer my skeletal undead to my rotting, fleshy undead. I've never had a liking for Zombies or Ghouls, and this is translating into the new model range as well. I like the idea of the Corpse Cart, given what I've heard of the rules, but it comes under the fleshy undead category so I'll probably end up not using it.
That said, I never really liked the Black Knight models (ended up using Bretonnian Knights) and like the look of the Varghulf model, which sort of looks slightly fleshy. So I'm preparing to contradict myself, depending on the new range.
I've only seen one Vampire miniature that has tempted me, the one that looks half bat half vampire. It's floating around on the boards somewhere, and I thought it looked pretty awesome. But as for the rest of the range, I'm pretty uninspired. I think I'll stick with the current Lahmian miniatures.
As far as other models go, I do like the new Skeletons, and have been holding off getting Grave Guard until the new models come out. I want a bit of a closer look at the Dire Wolves, but I think they're an improvement over what is currently offered.
I don't know about the 10 models box thing. Provided they also offer a 20 model box (I think they did this with other armies) then I think it's fine. I think I'd prefer a 20 model box, though - spare bits never go astray!
All in all, I think I'm fairly happy with the way things are going. I don't need new Vampires or Necromancers, as I'm happy with the ones I have (I know that's a little selfish of me). I've always wanted a little more variety, and we seem to be getting that. And I haven't heard any rumours that have made me overly panic about what they're doing to my army, yet. So yeah, I'm pretty happy. Maybe 60-70% happy.
Now I'm just waiting for the rulebook, to see what's true and what's not.
The new white dwarf shows the contents of the spearhead, and I'm not terribly impressed. 10 grave guard, 10 skeletons, 10 ghouls, etc. Not enough of to field any complete unit.
The female vampire model is skunk-ugly.
I intend to buy the army book and see what list I'd build and then decide if I'm going to resurrect my interest in vampire counts. I haven't played my undead in a long time, so I'm looking for something to spur my interest.
Also, seems like Slanneshi daemons will be striking first as well. Looks like after HE, GW have decided it was a bit much giving it to a whole army so are going to give every army the ability to ASF to compensate. :rolleyes:Originally Posted by King Ulrik
I'm not a fan of many of the new models, they don't really strike me as fantastic even if I don't mind them like the new skellies. They're good, but nothing special. Don't like any of the new vampires, looks like GW is taking VC in a completely new direction.
VC were already a pretty powerful army, and only really needed some small tweaks and a bunch of new models, they didn't need a complete overhaul. If anything, the HE needed more of a change and more thought than 'ASF and more special/rare. Done!' VC are getting very large changes.
From the rumours so far, it looks like they will be a very powerful army. Of course, rumours always seem to play up the good things and play down the bad things and every new army seems overpowered until they get some real testing by gamers. I'll be interested to get hold of the new army book, but I'm not overly excited and probably won't get any of the new models except maybe corpse cart.
i think (mostly) that the new models look kinda weird and as i have read the von carstien trilogy its not my idea of vampires especially running around with no hair the gg look ok and so does the corps cart but apart from that in not so sure
