Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm interested to know; apart from the endless list of mistakes in the army book, what do people actually like about the army book? what do you think has improved? what are your opinions on the new models?
I don't really have any experience with the old Vampire Counts army book, however I really like the new models.
I love the new book and I'm just enjoying reading through it and trying out ideas with limited analysis for now.
I like the concept of an ethereal army with cairn wraiths, spirit hosts (no longer a 0-1 selection), and black knights. But right now, I don't plan on including an ehtereal vamp.
The insubstantial steeds rule kicks ass. Black Knights are even more powerful now. It's too bad you can't include a vamp without losing that rule, but I do plan on taking some with a wight lord BSB kitted up.
I think the concept behind the zombies is cool, even if they suck in combat. I think there's an incentive do really start out big with these.
I love that skeletons can take magic banners. They are suddenly much more effective for a 25 point banner. Those 25 points will help you run down the enemy that's wet his knickers and run home to mommy.
+1 to rank bonus and double unit strength? That is fantastic. I'm looking at blocks of 25 or 30 skellies.
I think that kastellans being able to take a 25 pt magic weapon is stupid. A str 7 lance is so much better (sorry that was a complaint).
I think the book as a whole is very cool, and I hadn't even noticed a lot of the mistakes yet. I grew really tired of playing VC and I switched to WEs. The new book has really refreshed my interest, and I like many of the new models: The Grave Guard are fantastic and so is the Corpse Cart. The new method of designing and modeling plastic minis is producing some nice results.
Thanks, Dogmeat, for asking that question. Rep up.
The corpse cart, dire wolves and ghouls are a bit too grotesque for me, but they are designed well. The skeletons and grave guard are awesome though. I'll be buying loads of them, just to model and paint (and maybe someday play)
My only problem with the book is . . . why don't they do this with every book?
I wish you could customize and mix and match characters and units this much with every army. Maybe not the same way as vamps do it, but take the High Elf book for example, they basically just cut and pasted the old book into the new one and added an army wide rule and a couple new units. The magic items are pretty horrible, the characters severly bland (really only 2-3 combinations of items worth taking) It's like they had 2 weeks to write the HE book and 2 years to write the Vamp book.
It's like Wood Elves squared. I felt overwhelmed picking from among all the WE lord and hero possibilities, but this VC book. This is staggering. It's so much fun to just consider different ideas. I think it really opens up VC to played in novel, unique ways.
I love the fact that I still havn't settled on a 2k list because the many options, and great new stuff I want to include.
I like the artwork and the amount of fluff in the book and the artwork is pretty good.
BEN DIESEL FTW!!!
Can you not choose to give heroes the weaker type of mount rather than the strong one so they get the ethereal steed too?Originally Posted by David
I don't really like many of the new models, but overall the new rules seem ok. I'm starting to like the huge diversity in vampires you can have now, it almost makes the choices in equipping them too hard.
I also love the drawing on the cover.
I like what they've done to the old units, and the changes to the magic, having a bit of trouble with the completely new units though, just takes a bit of time I guess. I had so much fun casting Wind of Undeath as many times as I could against my Lizardmen opponent, and my magic phase takes longer because I can't decide which of all the spell I want to cast, what with the great Lore of Vampires and Forbidden Lore power.
I for one is thrilled about the new book despite the mistakes that needs a FAQ. The whole rare boost is just wonderful, and I really enjoy the new diversity in characters. I was really thrown out of my comfort zone with some things, such as weak zombies, ghouls and new necromancers. Yet it’s refreshing to be taken out of that comfort zone, so that you need to come up with new tactics and setups.
The special choices are very nice and balanced. I really enjoy the new ability of Black Knights, the removal of 0-1 on spirit hosts and the Grave Guards.
I am fond of the 25pts banner for Skeletons, especially since it isn’t one of those “one unit of skeletons may have a magic banner”. The corps cart is disgusting... just disgusting… Yea, I think I like it
The magic is a new spot for me, and I am very pleased about how it turned out! Wonderful new spells and making all vampires wizards just makes me happy!
To sum up: I feel really good about the new book! I think they did a good job (save proof reading it)
