Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey all new to forum and new to VC here.'
Played Skaven as a first WHFB army and nearing the end of my 1.5k list, and already dying. And im playing skryer shooty army, not even a horde army.
Always liked the VC fluff, espeically the blood dragons, and because everybody seems to agree taht the blood knights are ridculously overpriced (points wise), I think I must find a way to include two of these units.
The skaven army was my tournie army, pretty lethal but not overly exciting to play, actually kind of reliable despite the tendency to self destruct. Id like to move in a very different direction. I was wondering if I co uld build a dynamic, fast moving, hard hitting VC force that built around the story of a fallen Bretonnian Paladin who became a vampyre, and took his best knights with him?
Now that DWolves arent minimum core, is there any way to build an army like this that would win most (not all) games but still be true to a shock vampire army?
I would be guessing 2k points bare minmum, but more likely 2.25 or 2.5 k points.
Sounds nicely :-)
The Lord is something you could put on a flying mount or something..Make something special wit that one :-) I don't know how a Abyssal Terrow will work out in a battle of 2k-2.5k, but that could be an option as well.
As for the other chars...Dead companions like other skilled team mates of the Paladin could act as the vampires. The new female version maybe could be the dead wife? ;-)
As for the units...Well, I just don't like zombies, but you can convert Bretonnian infantry or maybe use Empire stuff to get your Skelletons. Ghouls is an option as well, but with the new models it's harder to convert something like that...Skelletons should not be a problem tho :-)
As for the special units you will go for cavalry ofcourse. Well with the option for Black Knights you are kinda done..They work nice and they can be converted perfectly :-)
Blood Knights could be a stash of elite Bretonnia units..Make something of that..They realy should look nice! Maybe it's an idea to use 5 bretonnian charactars to represent the might of this unit...
I don't know how far you want to go pricewise, but you can make realy nice elite units :-D Like I said about the Blood Knights, take a bret BSB as flagcarrier, take a Green Knight as champion. I like the Bret models, and i think it would look great if you make a detailed unit like this!
This would be a cavalry army (exept for the skelletons if you go with that) and i tried that on tournements as well. It works, but with the new rules i don't know everything yet how to tweak your characters.
As for the Special units/rare units you can take the Black Knights (like 3x6) and the Blood Knights...The Skelletons can save the flanks if that's needed, and take a Varghulf (maybe even 2?) to take out some shooting if you got trouble with that. (A dead Griffon would be very nice as Varghulf IMO :-))
You will lack on some things like fell bats or strong infantry..But hey, like this it should do a great job i think! With the old rules cavalry armies did work, and I expect that it still should do the job!
And with the possibilities of converting it should look realy nice as well :-D
Would love to see some pics if you are working on it :-)
Yes wolves dont count to core minimum so you cant go an all-cavalry army anymore..But you want 2 units of Blood Knights??Thats crazy...!
Anyway, imo 1 unit of 5 Blood Knights with banner + a pimped spellcaster vampire can do the work for you, support them and heal them if they die.(as i think a fightly lord with them is point sink) while the rest of the army will be tarpits with vamps leading them..no zombies for me tho hehe.At least thats what im going to do..except the lord will be von carstein.
Now about the fluff,as you cant choose to be a ''blood dragon'' anymore, you can paint your lord same as the Blood Knights..He still has his best knights with him..5 or 6..or he has like 15 best knights? You can convert your skeletons from bretonnian infantry too, give a nice bretonnian look from the banner simbols also..i dont know..so many options..
i hope i helped
I myself am in the process of building theme'ed zombies made up of the common units from the enemies that I face most frequently, and my Black Knights are made from Bretonian Knights.
Assuming your going for 2000 points then your going to have to spend a minimum of 240pts on core and it has to be either skellies, zombies or ghouls (or a mixture).
Zombies can no longer house characters so for your shock and awe army I reckon they're right out as they have no use other than meeting the minimum core unit selection.
Skellies could be used as an old school style necro bunker, plus with a vamp with Lord of the Dead you can keep on raising them.
Ghouls are probably the most useful. Give one of the vamps Ghoul kin and at the end of the first turn they'll probably be closer to the enemy than your knights (assuming barding)
Overall I'd say take 3 x 10 ghouls, maybe beef one up to 15 to act as a bunker for a caster vampire if you have one. Take summon ghouls on the caster if poss and ghoulkin on any of the other vampires.
