Having just got the New Vampire Counts book recently I've been reading through this past week. One unit that I have had my eye on for awhile are the Carin Wraiths as I really like their models. I also like the idea of the banshee as well. Anyways I was just curious about their use in 2000-2250 battles and in a magic heavy list (not made yet as I have a lot of choices to choose from lol).
So does anyone have any experience with the banshee in this new book?
Is it me or does any other necron player get annoyed when they see people saying "Necrons eat souls". How is that even possible as souls are part of the warp and necrons want nothing to do with it? Eh probaly me just me being picky.

The Banshee has her uses, but I've stayed away from her, because I want my wraiths in combat, and if she's there, I characters can challenge her and stay out of trouble. She also reduces the combat effectiveness of the unit, and ensures that charging anything with magic weapons becomes a big problem, as they'll just kill her in a challenge and wrack up combat res.
But if you want your banshees to move about, picking off support units, and if you're counting on her howl to get around armor, then she might fit your strategy.
I think no. You need to spend points on at least a small unit around her, and the rest of the unit you want to be getting into combat ASAP while the banshee you want to be keeping out. The howl isn't even going to do all that much except against really low leadership armies. Its just a bad combination of combat and long range in an already very expensive unit that should be specialised.
It would be like if the unit champ of your blood knights had 1 attack and carried a magic bow instead of a lance.
The good thing about the Banshee was that see could qucikly dodge around units screaming at the best target, making her a unit champ with a particularly expensive unit takes away her mobility.
I think I'll be running Cairn Wraiths only on occasion. I like the unit, like the fluff, great conversion opportunities, but man, they're expensive. 5 of them cost about the same as a basic unit of blood knights.
Just taking three and a banshee cost almost 180 points, twice the cost of a banshee in the 6th ed. You lose two str 5 attacks when taking a banshee, and one good magic missile can destroy the entire unit.
I don't think wraiths are worth taking unless you take 5, enough to claim a flank/rear bonus or grab a table quarter, making them nearly 300 points with a bansee.
THe more I look at the unit and possible lists, the more disappointed I am that these are so expensive.
well, they have to be used differently. Use their skirmish/ethereal ability to the maximum. I'll agree, I won't be using the banshee, but with movement 6, I don't want the wraiths in combat ASAP, I want them heading up the flank out of site for a while, til the rest of my units are ready to be dansed into combat, then I'll use them on the flank. Don't forget the terror ability as well. Most magic missiles require line of site, your wraiths can jump in forests or behind terrain to hide from them, plus, you're going to have 6 dispel dice usually.
to sum up - Banshee no
wraiths, expensive, but better protected then the varghulf and can get a flank bonus if there are 5 of them.
They can get the flank bonus, yes, but cannot deny ranks being skirmishers even if there are 5 of them.
I think the banshee is great, now she can effect immune to phsycology units she is even more useful than before and the single model is cheaper as well. As a unit they are worth the costs, sure they have a glaring weakness, but if you take out your opponents way to deal with them they can have free reign and kill things unopposed. The way I look at the banshee upgrade is I'm paying xxpts for the banshee which joins a unit of wraiths, the unit kills things in 2 different ways.
BEN DIESEL FTW!!!
i feel that for the banshees efectiveness has been greatly reduced as she now is escorted by 2 wariths at least which if u plan to use the banshee as a missle platform theres 2 expensive wraiths being kept out of combat just for screaming attcks 100pts wasted just for a hitshild for a banshee ouch!
and esp now that you have to pay for the lahmia power of -1ld which made bansheees in prev ed effective agnist most armies when screaming into cc as i would use to vamps to give units -2ld and then scream at them for fun
now to gwet this to effective i pay more for a banshee and then have to forgo my vamp powers just to boost the banshees again and then on top of that pay for those vamp banshee boost power
i love the fluff though how ever for this new unit though
i still find 175 pts for one banshee excesive
and for 5 to get a flank neg is 250 without a banshee way too much
so for me i wouldnt be taking them as they cost way too much
i have been taking 5 wraiths joined by a vampire with the spectral form power, along with a unit of black knights and some wolves. i really like how they work on the flank of my force. but i pair this with a strong magic phase based around the dance in my center so dispel dice normaly go tords that and not to his raize dead. and that spell is truly what makes the point sink of the unit worth it.
though if i switch my magic base around i normally drop him and his wraiths for a vargoulf it does the same thing basically, just not as fun.
i have used 2 units of three with the banshee and used them in tandem but it is really bad compared to the old 2 banshee play. still fun but not worth it.
in my opinion wraiths are a bells and wissiles unit, lots of fun but very close to not worth the points. i like them more than i should probably.
