Welcome to Librarium Online!
I just got a box of 10 Dire Wolves to expand my army with. I will be using 10 wolves in my 1,000 point army. Any suggestions how to use them? I have played some games with VC, and some games with other armies too, but I never got to use any fast cavalry.
Should I use them in two units of 5 wolves each? Personally I was thinking of using them as a big unit of 10 as my common enemies (skaven, wood elves and lizardmen) have got quite enough shooting to render a unit of 5 useless in one or two phases.
Oh and also, I assume I'll be using them to run down enemy war machines and stuff?
A Tau Ethereal was thought to have been killed today by a Bloodthirster. However, many Tau were seen fleeing the scene and are considered suspects.
Generally I would use two small units rather than one big. I use mine for cluttering up my opponents battleline, run them up and angle them so any charges will result in you being able to countercharge, or just messing with his line so he can't gang up on you. Also, if you can use them to threaten warmachines etc. at the same time, it will be even more annoying.
Hunting for warmachines and drawing out fanatics and frenzied models are other very good uses for the doggies.
I tend to run small units, mostly 5-7, so I get multiple annoying units. A unit of 10 can be killed almost as easy as a unit of 5-7, plus the manueverability of the smaller units is a lot better. They are not excactly killy, so even big units won't do much against bigger units, whereas even a small unit can threaten a warmachine.
Hope this will be helpful, experiment with the dogs, when played well they are awesome.
Yeah use 10, i find when i use 2 units of 5, before they havedone anything each unit has lost 2 or 3. So i have 2 units of 2 and 3 where as if i had then in a 10 i'd still have a unit of 5 or so which is far more useful.
In previous armybook was 5 obvious or more in some situations because of usual count of enemy support units and you need overhelm and cause fear test on your charge, f.e. pistoliers. Depends on notorious unit big which you enemy uses.
Now there is 5 also obvious because is harder to shoot down 2x5 than 1x10. Enemy shoot 3x into your wolfwes and kill 3,4,3 of them. If they are in 1 unit unit is finished. If they are 2x5 two wolfes survive
If your opponent shoot dawn your wolfes and doesn't destroy whole unit simply rerise them with IoN.
So your opponent uses shooting heavy army use 5 wolfes because he must kill the whole unit to protect rerise into full strength because arrow salve which finish unit doesnt kill wofes in another unit as when would they together.
If your opponent use multiple 6-8 members cavalery units use units with +1 wolf because he must pass ld test when charge or is charged.
10 member wolf unit is interesting count and i probably use 11 or 13 to cause ld test against heavy cavalery with 10 or 12 members
I tend to use them as 6-8 model units, any smaller and it is too easy for them to go below US5 if I need them to remove ranks, any more doesn't really benefit them and starts making fitting them in spaces harder.
well since dire wolves count as calavary they can only regain a single wound per casting of IoN as i read the rules atleast meaning healing a unit back up to starting strength is daunting and better used to increase skellies, grave guard, or the likes and i play to run 1x 10 at 1000 and 2x10 at 200 for screen units on the flanks
