For my black knights, I just use old bretonnian knights, all with the bat and dragons on they're helmets. But its not very imaginative and i've seen a lot of people using bretonnians. The reason is use old bretonnian knights is that when i hear "Black Knight", i think of a very primative, medival looking knight, without that much heraldry.
What else is out there?
I was thinking the previous, or previous previous models for chaos knights would be quite good, i think they might even have lances. I was also looking at using the Volands Venators' models, simply because they look nice, but they are a bit imperial looking.
I remember looking at several options when I was trying to work out what to use for my Black Knights. I'll just go through what I considered.
High Elves - Dragon Princes of Caledor and Silver Helms - I think I decided both of these were way too fancy and would take too much work to make them look suitably Vampiric. They're also both pretty heavy with the heraldry, so possibly not what you're looking for.
Bretonnia - Mounted Squires - Essentially just a peasant with a spear/lance on a horse. No armour to speak of on the horse or the rider, so possibly not very knight-like.
I personally didn't like the Empire Knights, but I've seen people use them quite effectively. In one picture I saw a while back the modeller had replaced all the heads of his Empire Knights with skulls, meaning he doesn't have any of those silly plumes floating about the place.
That's all I've got at the moment. I haven't really looked at alternative miniature ranges, at least not for cavalry.
(This is my first post!)
After reading the fluff on them, I was considering either
a. getting some empire horses and just putting skeleton warriors on them with lances from another plastic unit or
b. getting some bret knights and swapping the heads with grave guard heads.
I think the high elves mounted units look much too like high elf units to be convincing of anything else.
I've ordered most of the stuff for mine around the internet, so I will post some pictures after I've started if you like.
I'm using the Dragon Princes, but my army has developed a little bit of a theme that way. My primary unit of Skellies is composed of Skeleton/DE Warrior conversions and one of my Vampires is a converted HE Lord w/ GW.

I use brets but with grave guard heads and gg banner, everyone down my shop compliments them.
Hi I am just new to this and I haven't been playing long. I didn't like the black knight models as I don't like the skeletal steeds so I used the armoured horses you can get in bitz then topped them with the bretonnian knights. These horses look good due to the barding and the horn on their heads - quite Nightmare-ish. I'm playing a 1500 battle against my boyfriend later (he's empire) and I need to beat him. Any advice? He always has a warrior priest (I can beat him in a challenge), cannon and/or hellblaster, handgunners and a mage on a horse who NEVER seems to die. Very annoying.
Depends on situation and sophistication. I have Bretonnian Grail Knights as my Knights of Blood Keep (Red Knights of the Red field, followers of teh Red Duke..get the picture? Red..). Black Knights, I use a combination of caparisoned Bretonnian and barded Empire steeds, with skeleton horses replacing the original horse, and grave guard riders, combined with Tomb Kings cavalry lower torsos

If you ask me, the best option for black knights is to get the Tomb Kings light cavalry and mix it with the grave guard. The black knights are basically mounted grave guard anyway. Just use the skeletal steed and the lower body of the light cavalry and mount the grave guard's top half on it. For the arm, I'd recommend using the spears that come in skeleton warrior packs since they look better than the light cavalry spears and they are useless anyway. I am actually going to be using skeleton warriors' top halves for my black knights, however, as I think the lightly armored, wispy look will help me achieve the ghost-knight look I'm going for. I'm even thinking of painting them up to look ethereal.
Fight my Brute:
Thats a good idea and yes, I got the whole red theme. Lol. Mine are half painted atm so they don't look very threatening Am having 5 black knights in my army. Good idea or not?
I use Empire Knights with Grave Guard heads and GG shields. It works quite well, and if you glue the GG heads right, they look like they are floating over the armor. I am also using empire militia and other soldiers as zombies in my army. I am in the middle of converting a HE dragon into a zombie dragon, WE Way Watchers into Spirit Hosts, a few NGs and Dwarves into skeletons, and maybe a few other random conversions to make my army seem like it has be "gathered" from many battles.
Also I may use the Zombified Empire foot soldiers and Knights to create a small Empire force one day.
