Welcome to Librarium Online!
Yes! my lord never leaves home without it!
Never! that's just asking for my lord to get shot to bits
Only in 3000+ pt games with a second lord
Only for fun
is it worth it at its pts cost? the -1 to hit is nice as combined with the cursed book can make the mightiest of heroes hit on a 6 and the flight and large target means almost anything can be charged but the large target also means that everything can see it and back ranks of archers can shoot it and it's just asking for a cannon ball down it's throat
although against armies without much shooting i think it would do very well, any thoughts?
Well, i like polls, they are fun.
Right well, i'll have to go for the fun choice, but i really mean that i'd want to use one "mainly for fun but also in my main army list for a while", when i get a decent looking conversion anyway.
I'd go for blood drinker, flayed hauberk, crown of the damned. Mainly to keep him a live, unless that is over 100 points?
I'd support him with a varghulf or two. Would be fun.
Yep, feel the same as doggy. His combanation is legal, exactly 100 points. For blood line powers I would go for infinite hatred, the +1 combat res, and maby red fury. If you charge a rank and file unit in the flank, combat would be drawn from the begining, and with the vamp causing 4 or 5 wounds, and the dragon causing 3ish, the enemy unit should need snake eyes to hold. I don't think this kind of thing would work againt knights, because of the Str of the vamp (though he would be turning average saves into a 4 up, the dragon 5+), so I would aim them at your opponents elite infantry, so black orcs, chosen warriors, most daemons, greatswords are all good targets.
Yeah as above for vampire powers, you need the +1 combat res really. Its a good choice if you know you're against a greater daemon, though still a major risk, killing the daemon will probably mean you're gonna win. Maybe not put him up against a blood thirster
A treeman or 2 should be no problem, then again a treeman on his own can struggle against rank and file.
Every time u field a large target u face the same problem...shooting and mostly things that cause multiple wounds. But thats not something to make u not fielding it, its like saying to daemon armies dont take the greater cause its large.
Advantage: Fly, terror, wounds,-1 to hit in HtH, most important if your lord has infinite hatred so does the dragon,5 str6 with re-roll rock.
Disadvantages: Large, T5, 5+armor.
In 2k its not wise to field 700pts models, especially in this army where u need magic and characters, i take it in larger games. All in all a vamp lord on a dragon is a scary site.
I've never seen one fielded, but would assume they play a similar role to HE dragons, which I field anytime over 2000 points, and sometimes under as well. A 2000 point or less army sometimes just doesn't have the means to dispose of a dragon, and with an insane combat resolution score and Terror, you are going to cause many, may casualties/flee reactions. Just don't get bogged down by a unit champion, as overkill is an effective control to teh number of woudns the unit can cause, and hence the enemy unit will recover ranks, standard, outnumbering etc, maybe enough to draw or even win combat (depending on how many overkill you can get)
I've been using a zombie dragon recently, and in fact 2 in the 3,500 point 'Ard Boyz games. I'd always field at least 1 at 3k+ games, and have been using one in my 2,250 "fun" list. It hasn't yet made the cut in my 2,250 tourney competitive army since it's too easy to pop the general with a lucky cannon ball or the like.
As for how it plays, it is truly devastating if you can keep the dragon from getting shot out from underneath the lord. I love the lances (balefire spike+infinite hatred or dreadlance) with red fury. It is amazingly powerful in terms of combat res since you'll be giving your opponent a -4 save modifier. Just avoid things with 5+ or better ward saves and you'll be causing ~6 wounds before your dragon even swings.
Now if you do use one in <3k games, it kinda determines the list you must take. With him being your general, you will need to go with more of the fast stuff (black/blood knights, varghulfs, etc.) in favor of grave guard and the like. And you won't have dominating magic, but you won't need it - vampires fight very well when they want to.
Yeah, at 2000 pts, you have to be careful. Flying out of range of support can be a problem, and then you're stuck in losing combats and combat res eats you away. Being unbreakable is sometimes a bad thing. And as has been said, any shooting is a potential threat. Even 20 gunners randomizing onto him can cause you to roll more dice than is practical to make savers against.
All that said, I will be assembling mine soon and running it at 2250 games for fun. Walking death seems like a smart bet, along with the combos mentioned here.
The cursed book, meh. It's good for just one turn. If you had points for the book of arkhan, you'd have 28" of movement in the first turn and thereafter.
Well, I voted for the 3000 point or above, since I will eventually get a zombie dragon for bigger games. However, I think through this discussion, people have missed the most important thing to remember. Sure, having a fun game, or using a large monster effectively is something to discuss, but it is the principle of the whole thing. It is a vampire... RIDING A DRAGON! That's just bad ass.
I am heading off to the Peace Corps. It is bery likely I will not be back. Good luck to all of you endeavors.
