Just wondering how many points people usually spend on VC characters in a normal 2000 point game? who goes character heavy, who goes troop heavy, why and how does it work for you?
I haven't played the new book yet. I played 6th ed. for about two years before switching to Wood Elves. In the past, I ran a pretty standard setup. Two vamps and two necros. Back then I felt that VC really needed to maximize all its hero slots to work effectively, unlike, say, Wood Elves where I could use just three heroes but get more bang from my buck out of the troops.
Again, I havne't played the new book, and I've just been watching other guys play and tinkering with lists and restocking on new models/old units I'd sold off.
Right now, I'm using three heroes that will total 895 points. A tricked out Vamp Lord, a lesser Vamp, and a Wight King BSB.
I haven't played with the new book, either, though I have spent quite a bit of time tinkering with lists. At 2000 points, I have a really hard time keeping my characters under 1000 pts. I love Wight Lords, but I have trouble resisting "just one more vampire", since they not only add desperately needed CR to whatever unit they're in, they also give more magical power... and then, since I've already got a character in there, I always feel justified in buffing him up to protect my investment. It's a vicious circle. I don't know how anyone could run a VC list at 2k with less than 700 pts in characters. For those that do, I'd love to see some lists and hear some feedback on how well they work.

Used the new book and i find three vamps and a necro normally on a cart it's about 800pts or so i generaly don't use a lord at less than 3000-2500pts then you can add 200 to the caracter allowance, this works ok as your base troops are cheap and the vamps hide in the tougher units.
People here play 2250, so it's not as bad going high on characters. There's still a lot left over, but if we were playing 2000, I'm not sure what I'd change. I guess I'd exchange the beefy Grave Guard unit for 25 more skeletons so I could keep my heroes as is.
In the current list I'm working with (still building the army) my characters clock in at around 800 points.
One Vampire Lord, two Hero-level Vampires and one Wight. I'm not sure if their points values are final, though, so things may change.
EDIT: 'Tis a 2000 point list, by the way.
My general rule of thumb is spending somewhere around 1/3 of your points on heroes.
Id be curious to hear from some of the people who either skimp on characters or go all out, for any of you people, where do you points go?
I've taken a liking to the Drakenhof Banner and the Vampires have such great stuff to choose from its hard to do it on the cheap. My last 2000 point army was part of a 2 vs 2 (VC,VC vs DE,Chaos Slaanesh) and I had 1082 points of characters, it was a massive victory in favour of the Vampires. When your core is made of skelletons and zombies you need the heavy hitters and with the low cost of core theres usually enough points around to do it.
