i was just woundering which of the two hero choices people preferred using as a VC BSB.
firstly you have the Vampire. High weapon skill, high strength and a possible spell caster. his wealnesses lie in how easy he is to kill for his role. if you expect to take magic banners it means that you cannot rely on magic items to save him leaving you with just bloodline powers. dont get me wrong this is sill a solid option but with a magic banner your left with heavy armour, and his toughness of just 4 means he is prone to even the well placed hits of gobbo's taking him out. on the other hand you could just not give him a magic banner and go the magic item route but with so many nice and usefull banners would it be woth the points.
which brings me to the next option, the white king. this leadership 9 hardcase is just what you need for when loosing combat as he'l often save you the odd wound or two over a vampire, but with the avrage combat stat being no higher than most armies elite infantry he is below most other hero's ability. On the plus side people should be wary of challenging him as he has 3 attacks with possible s6 from great weapons with killing blow, and his toughness 5 gives him real surviveability even in challenges. he is cheaper than a vampire but lacks spell casting and suffers from magic banners nulling magic items just as with the vamp,
so for the role of a BSB in a VC army i was woundering just how you validate your choices.
Thanks once again,
Leadership has nothing to do with combat res wounds in a VC army - you may be thinking of daemons. It only helps against crumble checks if your vamp dies (or if something specifically attacks your leadership).
Anyway, I take the drakenhoff banner, which is extremely powerful. As such, I put it on the most resilient character I can to keep it on the field longer, so I always choose a wight king. Extra toughness and wound vs. a base vampire for less points. Sure, no mage and don't fight as hard, but who needs it with the whole unit having regen?
I also use a Wight King, with the Drak banner in larger point games, as my BSB. I almost always find points for a WK BSB in all of my armies, even if I can't afford the best banner, just for the one less combat res wound.
Nah, you don't regain lost wounds because of a BSB, it instead makes you suffer 1 less from combat res / crumbling tests from dead general than normal to everyone within 12". It also provides the standard +1 combat res in combats in which it is involved.
So, for example, your unit of ghouls loses combat by 3, but is within 12" of the BSB, it only takes 2 wounds. Even if your BSB is in the unit, you don't ever automatically regain wounds - you need Invocation for that.
I like both, if your taking a drakenhoff banner its well over a 100 points so you don't want him to die easily so take a wight king. Although if i'm taking 4 vampires then I like to go over the top with magic and might aswell take a vampire as a BSB, also because I'll probably have another vampire in that unit.
An offensive vampire BSB isn't too bad. Let him take an alternate lore like beasts and despite not having magic weapons he is still a monster in combat.
The Wight King with Drakennhof Banner and give him a great weapon. Toughness5, 3wounds, 3x str6 magical attacks with killing blow swings it for me.
Depends on the army really. I probably would not take a vampire BSB unless he/she also had the dread knight power. Drakenhof + blood keep + blood knights = uber unit of death.
Other than that though, the wight king is sturdier.
I am heading off to the Peace Corps. It is bery likely I will not be back. Good luck to all of you endeavors.
Maybe a vampire BSB with War Banner and walking death, +3 CR right away, yum.
