Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey all, I'm a brand new WFB player, and I'm going to be starting off with the Vampire Counts. What I want to ask is what unit should I start off with? I prefer to buy a small unit before buying a codex so that if I can't stand painting them and putting them together, I can easily switch. I'm kind of an aggressive player, what unit would suite my aggressive tastes?
Welcome to vampire counts, and indeed to LO.
In terms of starting you'll probably want to begin with either skeletons or crypt ghouls, as they are the most popular core units in the army, most people aren't using zombies at the moment and the models are fairly horrible. If you wanted to get something aggressive then I would vote for the 10 man box of grave guard, with great weapons.
One of the best things about VC is the ease of painting them, once you have the hang of bones!
Arms are an instrument of evil, No measure for thoughtful men until there fail all other choice but sad acceptance of it.

I would go with some skeletons, since a couple of core units are compulsory in any army, and skeletons are IMHO the most dependable core unit for vampire counts.
I like ghouls, but with some graveguard. Expessially if you like aggressive style of play, then Ghouls are right up your ally. With 2 poison attacks you will get alot more hits off with them compared to skeleton warriors.

Vampire Counts-4000 Points
Black Templars-2000 Points
Thanks for the help guys. I purchased some grave guard like starshowerblade recommended, and decided that they where easy enough to paint and assemble, so I bought the codex, and now I think I'm really going to love playing Vampire Counts.
Ghouls look like they have a pretty awesome statline, and they are the same price as skeletons so that should sate my thirst for offensive action. The Skeleton models are fun to work on though, so I will have to include both.
Next step is the rulebook so I can figure out what all this stuff like great weapons, heavy armor, and power dice do. That wil have to wait until next paycheck though. Thanks guys.
