Welcome to Librarium Online!
I haven't played Warhammer in a couple years and am now getting back into it with the vampire counts. I bought the battalion box and was wondering something about my zombies before I put them together.
Should my zombies have a standard and musician?
I say no, but its your call.
Vampire Counts-4000 Points
Black Templars-2000 Points
I personally like to have that extra +1 combat resolution when it comes to the bog that is the zombie horde

I made my zombies with both, but i never use the musician. though the standard banner is quite handy for the +1 combat resolution
I was leaning towards the musician and standard but just wanted to make sure I wasn't giving away free points to the enemy. For some reason I see my zombies getting flattened before the standard or musician even comes into play.
I would probably say no... Against pretty much any unit one on one, you are going to lose. No way around that. All the standard will do is make one less model die, but they are so easy to raise it doesn't matter. And if you do lose the unit, 100 VP's gone.
Now if they are supported in combat by other units (which they should be) then chances are the other unit will have a banner, so it won't matter that your zombies don't. Their other use is to hold enemy units in place until you get reinforcements into the flank, in which case more numbers (by raising) is more important than one less dieing.
And overall, zombies aren't really worth buying, they are just good to raise during the battle. And of course if you raise them during the battle, they don't get command at all.
The standard is just 100 free VPs for your enemy. Never expect zombies to win a combat on their own, ever. They could be fully ranked against a lone character who only has three attacks and somehow they will manage to find a way to lose by 7. They are there to be a tarpit. If they do charge into a combat to add numbers for causing insane courage tests, the unit they're supporting ought to have a standard. If they get caught out on their own getting whittled down, is losing one less zombie per turn worth giving up the 100 VPs?
Well yeah I understand that they are better raised than bought, but since I am just starting and all i have is the battalion box im gunna have to buy them. You have convinced me though so I will go ahead and not give them the command. Thanks for the input.
And hell, half the time it is even a bad idea to move them into combat, because for the +1 outnumber bonus you are potentially giving your opponent several easy kills which will tip the combat back their way. Only against hand weapon armed foot troops in the flank is it worth charging them in since they will remove ranks as well.Originally Posted by InquisitorAffe
Yikes, don't give the enemy an entire flank facing worth of zombies to hit! Charge them in when the combat is clipped and they're only base to base with a single enemy model =)
