I've got to put an 3000pts army list together to play a friend this friday.
It seems he's gonna come with some HE dragons (which i've never played before).
So I was wondering about a good dragon slaying unit.
My first option would be a blood knight unit, but someone told me, due to the frenzy, its way to easy to get rid of them with an eagle or something.
So my second thought would be or a black knight units with a warbanner and(/or) a vamp lord with dreadlance and red fury. Another option would be a vamp lord on an abyssal terror with the same dreadlance and red fury options.
What do you guys think? And what should I not forget about playing HE?
get a flying vamp lord -- with perhaps a frostblade
Kill the elf on top. That will net you quite a few VP, and the elf is usually fairly soft, especially compared to the dragon. Don't rely on monster reaction since they still have very good leadership, but it becomes a possibility. Then if you have ranks and a banner plus maybe a few wounds (from the rider) against the dragon you should be able to make it flee. It is quite hard to catch though. A Varghulf is good at killing the rider, and maybe even hurting the dragon.
Also, ethereal units. A lot of HE dragon lords won't have a magic weapon since they spend their points on defence and lances or halberds are more effective. However, if he knows he is facing VC excpect to see the amulet of light somewhere, so again knock off the rider before hitting the dragon with ethereals.
as mentioned above kill th guy on top although that can be harder than it seems as for 70 points a high elf can get a 2+ re rollable armour save and a 4+ ward plus he strikes first lessening the amount of attacks coming back at him also a high elf can fit 2 dragons into 700 points As a high elf I do it all the time
do dragons count as a hero choice for HE?
HE dragon lords will have a 4+ward save and good WS, so they're not as squishy as you think.
I would suggest a black coach supped up to flying would work well, but he may charge it first to get rid of it. Probably the sneakiest way would be to have a flying vampire hiding inbetween units (don't think he can join them) that could jump out and charge the dragon and rider when he gets close.
thanks for the advice!
one more thing, does killing blow work when I target my attacks to the guy on top of the dragon?
I might go for the flying vamp lord with frostblade and then let my general join a unit black knights with dreadlance + redfury
Oh yea, one last thing, do I need to fear the HE shooting? because he will probably use as many dragons as possible.
Yep - a HE dragon rider could conceivably have Armour of Caledor, Temkador's Gauntlets, lance, and the Talisman of Light.
So he could deal with a Vampire if he gets the charge, and possibly even the second or thrid rounds. A Star Dragon will eat a Vampire, especially if it has talisman of light to get around pesky ethereal (though TBH, Dragons should have magical attacks anyway, as according to older fluff, they were all wizards...)
that would make them a little too mighty I think.
well, I don't know if this will work, but how about if you give a vampire lord nightshroud and a frostblade? this way the dragon will lose all the charge bonus, always strike first rule and initiative reduced to 1. should be easy to kill a dragon then with a frostblade right? or did i miss something?
