Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've decided to return to Warhammer after a very long absence. I used to play Warhammer 40K (Eldar and Orks) but never really got very interested in Fantasy, apart from a brief but disastrous foray into Empire. However, a friend of mine just started up and I've been encouraged to start collecting again.
I've narrowed my choice down to to two armies- High Elves and Vampire Counts. The challenge I'm setting you LO'ers is twofold: Convince me why I should play your army, and then give me some helpful hints regarding how to go about it. I'll be posting an identical thread in the VC forum (if that's legal... if not, will some passing mod take pity and delete/move this thread to its proper place? Thank you).
Vampire Counts eh?
High Elves eh?
okay, enough goofing around. I play Vampire Counts in addition to Dwarfs, Orcs and Gobbos, and a little Wood Elves.
I like the Counts mainly because of the imagery, models, and such. Plus, being born on Halloween means I tend to be drawn to all things macabre, though not to the point of being Goth. So really, the question is what makes Vampire Counts appealing to you? Rules, Models, Background?
The one downside I have found with the Counts is how many people say they are overpowered. It kinda makes any wins you get feel somewhat tainted.
uh i think you really should decide for yourself :/ , maybe go to your local GW speak to staff, read a army book or 2 and do alittle web research TBH though as a starting army VC are abit of a bitch , its like diving in ayt the deep end , you also need invest in alot of models :/ , i reckon it would be faster and cheaper to start HE , but thats just opinion
I play Vampire Counts for different reasons.
First, the new models are very cool. Modeling and painting opportunities abound, and lots of old models still look great. Hordes of zombies, hosts of skeletons, mobs of ghouls traipse across the table. Ghostly knights and nightly spirit hosts swarm along the flanks. A gigantic bat scampers across the table.
Second, vampires benefit from outstanding psychology. Losing the ability to flee is a small price to pay for unbreakable troops that cause fear and terror.
Third, vampires benefit from some heavy combat units, like black knights, blood knights, vampires themselves, varghulfs, grave guard, and cairn wraiths.
Fourth, we have some cool rare selections. In addition to varghulfs and cairn wraiths, there are black coaches, chariot that has some potentially potent magical effects.
Fifth, our magic phase is excellent. You can accomplish a lot by rolling just one or two dice a turn. Or your vampires can cast higher level spells with success if you build them up.
Sixth, High Elves are pansy-ass, pointy-eared, prissed-up skirt wearers.
Hey, I play Dark Elves and VC's. VC learning curve was insanely easier then DE, which is comparable to HE. My points to make:
Most VC list outright crush calvalry armies.
The ability to create a unit of zombies that is guaranteed to be 5 unit strength strong behind ur enemy to massacre them when they run is fun.
You have the greatest hero and lord customization via powers and gear.
It's easy to dominate the magic phase if you build for it (Black Skull Staff, black periapt) and the Vampire Lore is pretty nasty in general.
VC's are generally a full anvil army. Very reliable, durable units that are a bitch to take down and win with combat resolution, not usually raw kills. With exception to ghoul and Blood Knight armies of course.
Cairn wraiths & Banshee are rediculously cool, and cool looking. (Ethereal Scouts that cause terror and have a brutal no line of sight needed scream) These alone can rape gun lines.
All units immune to psychology, cause fear, and unbreakable.
And great Characters if you like using them. (I only use Konrad of the 4)
Graveguard come in plastic, but Black Knights don't.
And the last point that I will make is that the Black Coach is the best chariot in the game if you can beef it up. It is very easy to make it with a heavy casting army.
Thanks for all the input everyone,
I got hold of the VC Army Book and now I think I'm almost certain I want to play Vampire Counts... their fluff, gameplay and modes are just all so cool, and I love the scope for modelling and conversion that they offer (I'm already planning converting Empire Knights into Black Knights, as I hate the current Black Knight models...). Just a few more questions:
Are Vampire Counts really so difficult to pick up as a beginning army?
How expensive are they, money-wise? I understand that they are a horde army but one thing that attracted me to them was the large amount of plastic models (which spares my wallet somewhat).
What would you recommend I begin with?
2. Depends. Skeletons go a long way when it comes to converting them. Lots of people use plastic knights for black knights. You can get by on the cheap, but you need extra models for summoning. Ebay is a good place to look.
3. Skeletons or ghouls for infantry, or some of both. A box of zombies for summoning. A box of dire wolves is a good deal.
I'd start off with a Battalion Box or two if you want. Two boxes would give you 40 skeletons, 40 zombies, 2 corpse carts (one for each upgrade option) and a unit of 20 ghouls. All for a pretty good discount. And if you check on ebay you can find the battalion for cheaper than retail price.
Yadre has a good point for a larger army if thats where u wanted to start.
For me, skeletons are a must and I roll with 40. I start with 2 units of 15, and raise them higher. At times I need 60 skeletons cuz I get lucky with Invocation, but if it ets that high I use a counter, but some opponents are anal over this. I don't like ghouls, but they can fill slots. Dire wolves are great, but suffer from vampire march rules which hurts as fast calv. The things you need are skeles, a corpse cart, 2 vampires and zombies to raise. The rest is up to you. I'd use Cairn Wraiths as your first rare choice, but unlike other races, all of our rare choices are great. The Varg gives the best price per dollar tho and it is solid all the way around.
Those are my 2 cents.
Thanks everybody. Just ordered my Vampire and 2 boxes of Skeletons... and I've got a proxy game against Wood Elves this afternoon to test out the army. Wish me luck
