So guys, I played a game yesterday using Count Mannfred as my general (it was 3000 points). He did relatively well, especially by the time he got stuck in combat. He got, at one point, 10 power dice. He was, as a magician, a very good supporter of the main units, and, being a vampire, he was excellent in combat.
My question then, is this. Does anyone use the vampire special characters? Now that they are slightly easier to use (compared to the old book), and they are only slightly more expensive then the regular vampires. If you do use them, how? Mannfred can have arcane items, so which ones do you give him?
I love using Mannfred, always been a fan of his fluff in the old codex too and kept with him in the new one. he is cheaper than a normal vamp lord with all the same stuff, the only problem is you'll normally waste some of the upgrades he's got.
I normally give him the skull staff and either the one where you sacrifice a wound for a PD (usefull since he has so many wounds, then you just cast summon undead and give him back a wound or put him in a unit with isabella) or staff of damnation or book of arkhan. He normally goes with great weapon wielding grave guard.
Most Notable Achievements:
Killed a Revenant Titan in one shot.
Killed 900 pts worth of Blood Angels in 2 turns while only loosing 4 pts.
I like Mannfred on a Barded Nightmare w/ Skull Staff and Staff of Sorcery. Put him with a reasonably tough unit and he's very difficult to kill, makes lots of magic and does a very good job of hampering your opponents magic phase.
I can't claim to have used any of the other special characters... Konrad doesn't look bad, but since he doesn't add any dice to my magic phase, I'm reluctant to use him.

Konrad is a great character for his points, but he dies every game I take him, he will mess one unit up if you get the charge/First strike, but if the enemy can attack him, generally he dies pretty fast.
I considered putting him in my regen banner unit of grave guard, then he would at least have regen, and the squad would be even more awesome in cc but i haven’t tried it yet / the unit doesn’t really need him.

I took Vlad to the UK GT Heat 2 and was pleasently surprised. He only fully died twice, once when his unit was charged in the front by bloodcrushers and in the flank by a bloodthirster and the other from combat res when his unit was beaten while he was challenging a lizzie Oldblood.
The best thing about Vlad is he's just so damn tough to kill. T5, 3W, 4+ ward, invocation, wounds he causes give him wounds back and on top of all that, the first time you manage to kill him on a 2+ he pops back up in another unit.
He's no slouch in combat and is a decent wizard by normal army standards (It says something about VC magic that I kept on refering to him as "only a level 3 wizard")
