Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hello, long time lurker, I've been playing VC for about a month now and have a nice sized army. Me and some friends have recently gotten into WFB, and we all love it a lot. I picked up VC as I absolutely love the idea of raising my units back after they die. My buddies picked up Dwarves, Greenskins, and Tomb Kings respectively.
Now I'm all for losing, and it doesn't bother me so much as I still have fun, but I just keep getting steam rolled by my friends. Especially Greenskins oddly enough! I've looked in the tactica department for hints and tactics to give these armies a run for their money but all the tacticas just seem to go over units and artefacts.
Thanks in advance for any helpful advice, if you guys need to see my army list it I can post it.
well you havent really said much so its hard to help
yes your list would be a start
and maybe post abit of how you play and how your freinds play
sure thing, sorry, I'll be less glib in the future.
First off I run an infantry heavy army, using a mannfred and hybrid CC/Magic vamps for heroes to keep my infantry hitting hard. I try to bog down with my skellies and ghouls, then trying to flank with my varghulf, Mannfred, Grave Guard, or (soon to be) Black Knights. Beginning turn or two I raise dead and invocate a huge unit of zombies to try and bog down enemy units, after that it's basically letting my guard and ghouls tear through basic infantry by utilizing vanhel's danse macabre.
So far my big heavy hitting unit is the grave guards with a vampire leading them and keeping them together. I use the book of arkhan on them so they get first strike and rerolled misses.
Here's a list
Barded Nightmare, Crown of Damnation, not sure what to get with the other artefact, maybe the staff that grants +1 casting and dispell
Dark Acolyte, Avatar of Death (dual wield)
Tomb Blade, Flayed Hauberk
Dark Acolyte, Avatar of Death (sword and board)
Sword of Battle, Book of Arkham
One Open Hero choice, not sure to put in a mounted Wight Lord or another vampire.
full command, no champ, hand weapons w/ shield
19 Grave Guard
Full command, minus champ, great weapons
5 Black Knights
Heavy Barding, full command(maybe)
I also have the possibility of using my 3 wraiths w/ banshee, but trying to stick close to 2250 points for tournament reasons. I also do not have the black knights yet, so not sure if they will make that big of difference.
Now my problem is that dispell ends up raping my army, this is pretty much in built with dwarves, but the friend that plays greenskins goes all out on dispell dice, he uses a special banner that gives him bonus dice, and an ability to steal one of my dice every turn. Eventually he gets close to the amount of dice I get on my magic phace, countering every invocation I try to toss out. That, coupled with his non-stop assault with fanatic carrying goblins and dual choppa wielding big 'uns and regular orcs, I have a hard time just getting the game to last more than an hour.
Dwarves it is a similar story, I get raped by their artillery and thunderers, then get massively dispelled during my magic phase.
Tomb Kings, it just seems that they have waaaaay too much stuff for me to dispell, all of their spells and bound items seem so powerful, also their specialty units are just absolute beasts.
Hey there , sorry for the short post - il try offer some more solutions tomorrow (gf is nagging as we speak lol) i really believe a corpsecart with a necromancer mounted on it is a great addition to your current list , it'd offer more p/d dice the option of taking some dispel scrolls or power stones , guaranteed spells of your choice (if you pay for them) the corpse cart sits in the GG unit helping with striking first and with balefire itl deal with enemy wizards within 24' i think , haven't got my book next to me , i personally love corpse carts in graveguard units with great weapons and a nice banner of strigoi or drakenhof banner , or both (to avoid debate it states in the VC FAQ that CCs can join units) add some cairn wraiths hiding behind the GG unit ready for a flank charge and goodnight ! as i said il try offer some more solutions tomorrow!
um, if this list is 2000+ points it is illegal, you need 3 core units (not including the CC generaloftheabyss mentioned, which is a good tip ) . The extra core might also help with your survivability.
maybe consider replaceing Mannfred who i assume is a lord? with a magic focused vampirelord (you can always use the same model). Try and get as much dice for the magic phase as possible. If not you will have to do the complete oposite and make your army so it doesnt rely on the magic phase.
I thought 2 core were the mandatory in a 2k pt army, eh no biggy just toss in a unit of 20 zombies and there it is.
Corpse Cart sounds quite good, I do have one lying around anyways. Thanks for the tips, couple quick questions though:
Drakenhoff Banner requires to get a BSB to carry it right?
Is it possible to purchase book of arkhan more than once and equip it to seperate characters so I can chain cast it from all of them onto seperate units?
All of the above advice is sound. I agree with manicdemise that you would probably do better with a magic orientated lord instead of mannfred. Access to more power dice and can still come out with a similar setup to mannfred for around the same points. Personally I prefer it, but hey it's your choice
As for the drakenhoff banner yes it does require a BSB, very nasty when combined with a WK and unit of GG. Along with the Corpse Cart it's tough to beat.
And no you can only take one book of arkhan as it's a magic item
Yeh as Corpse Lord said Book of Arkhan is only available once in any list , however as i suggested earlier the Necromancer mounted on corpse cart can choose which spells it has if you pay for them , so just choose Vanhels? and you have your second option albeit not a bound option.
You can't take the Crown of the Damned on Manfredd, his entry specifies you can give him 2 Arcane Items, not magic items in general.
2000AD's answer to all "How do VC deal with ..." questions: Forbidden Lore + 2 Power Stones.
Further answers will require more vodka.
If you take the Corpse cart you will have your 3 core choices
A unit of 3 wraiths is always handy, take the banshee and with the mediocre leadership of Orcs & goblins ( and especially night goblins, 5 !! ) you will certainly kill a bunch with the banshee howl. After that you've got terror and the wraiths are great to let fanatics be released.
What would be very good to do is, if your greenskin opponent has 2 units of Night goblins next to eachother with some space between them, to send your wraiths between both unit so that fanatics will be auto released. Your wraiths can't be hurt by those crazy goblins anyway and the fanatics will run rampant in the middle of the greenskin line.
Next to that, the Night goblins have to take a leadership test for terror and if they fail, they will run and all fanatics will be lost.
I once had a 2 vs 2 game where my teammate sent his Varghulf to charge a unit of beast of chaos hounds. On both sides of that hound unit were night goblin units with 2 fanatics each. The hounds fled but couldn't get far enough and were overrun by the Varghulf, the fanatics were released from both sides and all 4 went into the Varghulf. The varghulf regenerated all of his wounds and the fanatics ploughed through the goblinunits xD Both ran away, 1 into a forest and 1 off the table xD
That was an awesome turn.. :'D
