It's Round 4 of the Mapped Campaign, and the number one slot belongs to Mark. The number two slot belongs to me. And guess who I play next.
As we both play vampire counts, I need a leg up on him. He has a strong caster lord, with the ability to raise bats. He runs a fairly balanced list but beefs up his bats like mad.
I must field two units of skellies.
Two units of wolves.
3 spirit hosts.
Some black knights.
Regardless of who fields what, what's the best way to combat other undead? Does it come down to killing the general? Picking off characters?
Bats are problematic, BUT they cannot defeat ranked units of skellies unless you get out-flanked. Key is to kill his characters so that the rest of his army cannot support them, even tyring up the bats for a couple of rounds of combat might work.
The Spirit hosts will be excellent at holding up the bats, no wounds caused by these critters against Spirit Hosts!
Chances are that the Varghulf should be able to take down the enemy lord by himself, though I would supporthim using the wolves to increase the unit size (with teh wolves US2 each) and the Black Knights.

Killing his characters is the way to go. In VCvsVC I tend to find that the most important phase is the magic phase, by killing his characters you help yourself in that.
With that in mind, if you can you might want to take a corpse cart or 2, preferably with Balefire, not only to hinder his magic but to add a bound spell or 2 that he has to use dispel dice on. Also might be worth taking the Skull Staff or Staff of Sorcery on a character for the +1 to dispel (Or if you want to go over the top then take Manfredd (Lord) and take both)
If you can get to his general and kill him then by all means go for it, but failing that just get to his characters, don't get hung up on chasing a general around the battlefield.
And if you don't mind being sneaky, since both of you play VC you should both know what magic items are available. If you haven't taken the Book of Arkhan (or other bound spell) then towards the end of your magic phase do a little bit of acting to make it look like your planning on using it. This works best with pretending to have the Book as almost everyone knows about it and it's also an awesome bound spell. If you can get him keeping a dispel dice back to counter the non-existant book then that's one less dispel dice he'll be using against your other magic.

i dont know how flexible your list is...but i won 2 different games by smiting vamp lords with wraiths.... theyre a good to run at a lord and then hack away. you could also take big units of skellies and just try to out combat res him, and finally one of my personal favorite tactics is the amazing exploding vampire, give someone the hand of dust, run him into the generals unit and decimate his bodyguard, probably also good for bat swarms... give it to a flying vampire and go bat hunting
I have never played in such a battle as I avoid Same army battles like the plague of undeath.
But i would imagine that lots of bound spells is a must if you want to get any spells away, which is an approach that I often use against other big magic users like Skaven or Tomb Kings.
Other than that I would stray away from cavalry really, against unbreakable foes thay just won't have enough to batter through them, so I'm not sure the Black Knights are the best of plans. I would avoid wolves as well to think of it.
In order to say something other than "Everything you're definately taking is rubbish" I would say that the Spirit Host is, unlike normal battles, a good idea to protect a flank in an unCivil war.
Good Luck in it though
His bats will most likely attack your knights or wolves or varghulf as everything else they can't do anything or will loose to static combat res.
So make sure your set to countercharge any bats that do make it in as most likely it'll last several rounds of combat.
Oh, and kill the general. just fyi
Most Notable Achievements:
Killed a Revenant Titan in one shot.
Killed 900 pts worth of Blood Angels in 2 turns while only loosing 4 pts.
I'd say that you should definitely keep your Black Knights, as you can use their flank charge to break any stalemates that might occur between your infantry units.
Obviously, killing his general is the surest route to victory, but since everyone knows this, most of us put in a considerable amount of thought and effort to keep that from happening. Concentrate on making sure that you take out his vampires/necros before he takes out yours. If you can get a benefit in the magic phase, it will make taking out the general and his unit a lot via combat res a lot more simple.
