GW decided, for whatever reason, to have the name of a unit (character) selection the same as the name of a special rule that applied to multiple other units. That is "Vampire".
The Vampire characters benefit from being a level (x) mage [insert page ref here]. This is a completely stand-alone rule, and has no effect on...
The "Vampire" special rule, which applies to all units with said special rule (Black Coach, Varghulf, etc.) [insert page ref here]. This is the one that lets units march, don't suffer wounds from general dying, etc.
Please note they are very separate things. Units with the "Vampire" special rule are not classified as the Vampire character types, and do not become mages. Only the Vampire characters benefit from that rule.
I see this come up every week or two, is it possible to insert in the page refs (sorry, I'm at work) and have this stickied?
So what about Blood Knights they are both undead and vampires. What do they get by being vampires?
"Ah, but the truth is like an expensive whore, Jerek. She comes in many dresses and will bend over for any with the money to pamper her." ~ Konrad von Carstein
They, like the other models with the Vampire rule, don't crumble when the General dies. Also, their presence can march move non-vampire models nearby them.
Man this brings back memories of the Konrad argument we had raging after the books release.
2000AD's answer to all "How do VC deal with ..." questions: Forbidden Lore + 2 Power Stones.
Further answers will require more vodka.
Mostly because I was a big part of it at the start!!!
Shortest way of putting the difference is
"With the exception of Konrad, all "Characters" with the "Vampire" rule are wizards and can do X,Y,Z. - All "Units" (non-character) with the "Vampire" rule can X,Y,Z."
X,Y,Z = Read the army book!
I think having this question stickied would be a good idea. If they had a common VC questions would eliminate that problem and anybody with a question could look there.
Indeed, although arguably this is the actual case: :-)"With the exception of Konrad, all "Characters" with the "Vampire" rule are wizards and can do W,X,Y,Z. - All "Units" (non-character) with the "Vampire" rule can X,Y,Z."
