Looking at the various models available to the races, I'm particularly attracted to the night goblins, and the warriors of chaos models. From an overall lore perspective, I have always been a fan of vampires.
I have picked up the Battle for Skull pass starter set so far. If I were to aim towards building an army of around 2,000 points which would be cheaper overall ($ wise) to build, considering I already have some goblins from Skull Pass? In addition, which army do you guys generally find more enjoyable to paint, and to plwy with?
From what I have read so far, it seems like Chaos is a very strong army, but I'm not sure how tactically diverse it is - it just seems like a march forward and hulk smash type of army to me (I could be way off, I really don't know). As such, Warriors of Chaos seems pretty simple tactically, but they do seem fairly easy and fun to paint.
Orcs & Goblins are typically a horde type of army, and rely on their ranks and numbers to win combat resolution. Given large unit sizes of goblin armies, does it make it that much harder to move them across the field in a tactical manner, especially considering the randomness of animosity?
Lastly, Vampire counts also seem likely another horde type of army, and most of their magic seems to be single-mindedly focused on raising up more skeletons and ghouls. Lastly, the vampire counts look like their models would be the least fun to paint.
At the Games Workshop store nearby where I would typically play, the top played army is the Dark Elves, and there seems to be a decent balance of the rest of the armies, with nobody playing Orcs & Goblins at the moment.
I guess in the end, what I'm asking is out of these three, which do you think I would have the most fun overall with? Painting and gaming are both part of the hobby, and I guess it'd be helpful to look at the pros and cons of both aspects. Thanks!
i would disagree with you on the single minded magic, yes if your units are getting pounded you should focus on raising them back up. However in a game yesturday i used gaze of nagash to devestate a key unit of my openents. In all fairness i still lost xD, but the dude i was playing hasnt lost with lizard men in LITRALLY years and im still pretty new. He had so much dispell and magic dice i was just swamped.
WoC are not simple at all, it once again all depends on what you choose to do with them.
vampire counts are a horde army when it comes to core units everything else is completely different
i cant tell you what you would enjoy painting or playing :/ because every experience is different.
For painting undead: i pretty much speed paint my infantry using undercoat spray and then air brush then inks. When it comes to other models i take alot of time painting them, getting them to look good and customising with green stuff ect. I would say no army is more or less fun to paint then any other, you just get out what you put in. For example i am currently working on a zombie giant and im putting loads of time in on it, so it looks badass. I could have not botherd and painted it zombie colours, it would look fine that way but my way is more fun for me
In regards to painting the VC it does get a bit repetitive when your painting the zombies, skeletons, and ghouls because there are alot of them. Even so I think they look awesome when they are done which for me that helps me while I paint and makes it worthwhile.
I don't know if money is a factor for you, but for VC even as a hord army is very cheap and the painting can be very easy and fast. Personally I have a LOT of zombies (they were my core in the last edition...not anymore!) I think over 100 and still 40 that can be made. I made all of them using 1 box of zombie, 1 box of imperial militia, and bits from the sprues of my buddies who had no use for. A lot of conversions are available to you in VC, a few of my zombies are simply arms or swords or heads sticking out from the ground simulating they were just freshly summoned. Very easy to paint and very fast to build up(not to mention cheap $$) I can't say the same for orcs!
However if your friends are the boring/serious type and you really need entertainment, orcs is the way to go, I have seen the same army list of orcs facing the same army list of HE, one time getting massacred and the other total victory...randomness
