As the title suggests I would like to create a fourm on how everyone keeps there vampires safe and still be able to cast our all important magic. I have found difficulty it being able to do both effectivly. In my last 2 games (both verse WE) I have tried to either stick them in with a unit or mounting them and having them shadow bigger units. As a result when I had them in bigger units they got stuck in close combat for several turns and when I had them riding on horseback they where caught be my opponents eagle mounted hero. So how do you guys protect our most important characters?

I usually just stick him in with a unit of skeletons. Does the job most of the time. Occasionally he gets stuck in close combat, but as long as I keep the unit far back enough to watch over the rest of my units and keep them marching, then all is well.
I keep mine safe by killing everything that comes into contact with him :p Except, of course, blood thirsters and Kholek.. gotta avoid things like that!
A vampire having trouble with a wood elve hero????? serious raised eyebrow
I tend to use a wight king in conjunction with pure mage vampires I guess. Put the WK in the vampire's unit with SoK (obviously) and maybe nightshoud and challenge w/e come your way. He should handle most of the puny flying heros most armies can field. obviously not against what moob just said.
Avatar of Death/Dread Knight and a unit with a full complement of ranks, or a respectable amount of punch. Also, if a challenge appears too risky for my Vamp, I send in the unit Champion to die and be resurrected.

The only vampire who you have to worry about is your general. in which case kit him for magic, give him a ward save and the helm of commandment. The rest of the vampires should be able to handle themselves and really should be no concern about safety, unless you are really scared your magic kitted vampire is going to die when he has spectacular close combat ability built into him.

I KEEP 'EM IN A CARRY CASE *buddum tish*
but seriously as archonofdeath said, only vampire i worry that much about is my general who sits magic heavy behind the main line and usualy behind grave guard in a unit of ghouls with Knorad in the same unit. Firing out raise spells left and right , get through that you damn dirty apes!!
Mostly depends on who i'am playing but most games my Lord is either in his GG unit or a small squad of Skels, and probably 50% of the time he is running solo with a 2+ save. Also my strategy is sort of like a V formation. At the 2 tips of the V is 2 units and the base of the V is my caster and or his squad. I play magic heavy with some black knights to roll up flanks and counter enemy fast units, but i advance the tips of the V at full speed, keeping casters back but still advancing slowly. Anything that tries to fly or flank my casters, Raise Zombie walls and through my varg//wraiths at it. It has worked for me so far
Good Luck and have fun!

Sack that, i keep him alive on a mount, with a 6+ save in a unit of ghouls behind my grave guard which are flanked with ghouls to the max and summon like crazy, if the enemy has some mad flying shit i put my wraiths inbetween to join the fun.... you put a ward save on a caster vamp and uve just wasted its magic offensive/defensive power
