Welcome to Librarium Online!
I have finished painting some of my ghouls and skeletons, and all I have left to do is to finish their bases. I was wondering how others base your models?
I was thinking of putting sand down and putting dead grass. I am hoping to have them look like they are cursing the ground that they walk on. But I am not sure, any advice?
I do a translevania theme for my vc army. Scorched grass and snow flock over it. Works great.

I've always liked the idea of an unstoppable army of the dead marching through a winter that would sideline even the most determined army. I base them in snow, just mix some white sand/fake snow with PVA glue (make sure it's one that dries clear). The more glue you put the mroe icy it is, the less you put in the fluffier the snow is.
It's very messy but it looks pretty sweet. If I post pics I'll link them to here.

Killed 900 pts worth of Blood Angels in 2 turns while only loosing 4 pts.
Currently my theme for VC is spring. Dont laugh, it's not the flowery one you think. But just after the snow have melted and everything is damp and dirty. Base in sand then paint gravyard earth(as base) w codex gray for the rocks. Then add dusty earth flock from army painters as some great looking damp(flat on the ground) yellow grass.
Wow they look very fearsome. The snow does look very good.
Personally I go with snow.
Base with sand.
Paint sand with dark grey.
Light drybrush highlight of sand with skull white.
Add a layer of snow, not all over the base, just patches, vary it up a bit.
Wait for that to dry and add a second layer of snow on top of first layer to bulk it up.

Further answers will require more vodka.
I like snow- my WoC army already uses snow, and the "curse" theme. The front ranks have snowy bases, and the back ranks are trudging through a thick quagmire of mud after the boots of their comrades have churned it all up. Looks beautiful.
However- my VC army is actually from Araby, and so their bases have a very "40 thieves" look to them. Namely:
Base with fine sand
spray Spacewolf Gray
drybrush Codex Gray
ink Enchanted Blue (yes, ink after drybrushing- tints everything)
paint edges with enchanted blue
I've been working on/considering painting sheer cloth on them, like silks to keep with the desert theme.
I like this thread! Some really interesting basing ideas there!
My bases are fairly 'standard' affairs, I suppose. I use GW basing materials because I'm too lazy to think of something else or go to the effort of finding something suitable.
Essentially I just...
1 - Water down some PVA glue and spread it over the base
2 - Dip the base into the Sand and Gravel mix (I'm not sure if this is what GW call it...)
3 - Coat that with some more PVA so it will hopefully stay there
4 - Sprinkle a bit of flock grass in a few patches so it looks like tufts of grass
5 - Get some PVA glue on to that so it too stays on
It looks realistic enough to me that I don't feel a need to paint over it.
Not sure if I have any readily available pictures I can share, though... do attachments still work?
If the image does show up, I should say that I took that image very soon after putting the final layer of glue on. So that's why it looks a bit weird. It looks fine when dry as the glue dries clear.
