My friend has a Treeman in his 1500 Wood Elf list and I can't seem to kill it. Usually I swamp it with zombies and hold him up for the game but now I can't rely on that. Today I got lucky and he overran into my Ghouls. He killed my vampire, but my ghouls caused a wound back on the Treeman and ultimately won combat! I got really lucky and he failed his Stubborn Leadership 8 Break test and he fled into my Black Knights.
That's one case where the Treeman hasn't been too much of a problem. I know I could give one Vampire the Balefire Spike and Infinite Hatred, but even with no saves, magical and flaming I'll cause about 4 wounds. After my attacks he'll squash the Vamp.
So how do you people personally get rid of Treemen? It'll help heaps.
Thanks in advance.
Fire, which you have none of. I'd suggest throwing a Varghulf and a unit of fighters at it. On second thought:
It has high strength and toughness so to get past that you should put a weak unit in combat with it to hold it (zombies) then you should get the charge in with Black Knights with Lances to get a bonus to your strength, that should at least do some damage to it.
Do not throw Ethereals against it, all it's attacks are Magical
Also a Varghulf should do well against it with some support. The Hatred and high WS will negate his high WS, it's strength and toughness should be about a match for him.
Oh, hey The Baleful Spike to a vampire with Red Fury and The Night Shroud should be able to do some damage, or drop the Red fury in favor of Infinite Hatred and Beguile. this will either give you striking first with flaming attacks and any wounds get to attack again, or striking first rerolling to-wound and to-hit rolls with flaming attacks.

The thing is that he has an all combat army and has 9 deployments. All but one of them are effective in combat against my units. 2 of his characters aren't good in combat but they hide out of my sight and the other unit is a unit of fast cav. I constantly have to be cautious as I don't want any units to charge me. I can't really spare many units to fight the treeman.
Speaking of Forbidden Lore, IIRC Treemen have rubbsh Iniative, so pit of shades is fun.
You know what? Forbidden Lore seems to be my answer for everything, I'm sticking that in my sig.
2000AD's answer to all "How do VC deal with ..." questions: Forbidden Lore + 2 Power Stones.
Further answers will require more vodka.
Here especially Lore of Shadows will be great. Pit of Shades will do a job on the treeman ahnd the rest of the Lore is pretty handy against Wood Elves as well. If he's hiding some of his heroes away then the spell to give a character an extra flying move will cause him a lot of worry. And the spell that does 3D6 strength 1 wounds is very handy against enemies that are only toughness 3.
That aside Banner of Hellfire on some Blood Knights will definately do the job, and if he's combat heavy they should be pretty safe.
I usually struggle against Wood Elves as you dont really know how they'll play it. But if you can get rid of the treeman the rest of the army should fall pretty quickly.
The thing is that we're playing 1500 point games. If I do take Forbidden Lore it'd be on a Level 1 Vampire, and he won't be able to do much. I don't trust Blood Knights, especially as my opponent knows how to handle them. Even if I use a power stone to cast pit of shades he has 5 dispel dice and 2 scrolls.
What is your army build? At 1500 points I'd expect 2-3 vampires or 2 level 2 vampires and a Wight King. Against Wood Elves, with their insane mobility, I would have long lines of skellies and ghouls, avoiding zombies if possible. Zombies are literally free combat resolution for Wood Elves, and are a liability unless they are on their own. vampires should be suitably equipped to doge out of the way or cause massive pain, and red thirst/blood drinker is a useful combination to get your wounds back.

My army isn't really built for Wood Elves. I have 3 Vampires, 2 Level 2's and a Level 1. I have 2 units of 15 ghouls and a unit of 10 Grave Guard with great weapons. The Grave Guard and one unit of Ghouls have a Corpse Cart in between them. I have 2 small units of Black Knights and a Varghulf. He's got full mobility on me. My unit of Grave Guard was because I had to quickly fill in 130 points on my list and I was taking too long. I can lose ghouls and get more Grave Guard. Our last game I won with a massacre but that was fairly lucky around the end.
To get that Treemen, I'd recommend giving your Grave Guard the Banner of Hellfire. Backed up by the Corpse Cart and Great weapons you should at least make it sweat; for a stingy amount of points too.
I'm pawning this to everyone Check out My 'Nids Tactica and give your Oppinion. I'm Desperate for Attention.
My suggestion mirrors Cypher40k.
I'm expecting to come up against some treekin and perhaps a treeman in my next game vs. Wood elves. I've stuck a Wight King in a grave guard unit and given them a banner of hellfire and great weapons. With two corpse carts in range throughout the game I'm almost guaranteed ASF (unless the Wood elf player goes all out to dispel it).
There's one addition I'd like to make to our "Flaming" arsenal which is the Rod of Flaming death. Very handy to pick off treekin or to get some early wounds on that treeman
Good luck and tell us how it goes =D
