I'm thinking of starting up a vampire count army, and I was thinking of making it an infantry horde army (lots of skeletons, ghouls zombies, grave guards) Basically troops that are easy to raise and can outnumber the foe. Is this a viable option for counts? also what special/rare units would complement this type of army?
Well if you're focused on raising easy, go with grave guard and fell bats for special. For rare I guess something with the vampire rule to keep your horde marching, black coach being probably better as it moves at the same rate as your infantry but blood knights are kinda funny and could work with a fell bat screen
I reckon an infantry horde list would be cool. You'd need several caster vampires and a combat vampire for some extra punch in combat. I would say take a black coach because it can keep your line moving and can help support you in a charge. Your lord is going to need to be a magic one, preferably level 4 with Master of the Black Arts.
Thanks for the advice. Is there any reason why I should take the black coach over a varghulf? They both can keep the list moving and support a charge. I'm just worried that the Power dice the coach absorbs will hurt my army since I'll need to raise alot of guys
i think a corpse cart per 1000 points will do well to get those important 1st attacks
put a nice cheap necromancer on a cart 4 extra dice and maybe add some zombies to the fight
put a vampire inside a unit of skellys and equip one of them with helm of commandant, this unit could have a unit of grave guard next to it with a corpse cart nearbye, equip them with great weapons
This will mean tht they can march, and will be striking first, will hit almost anything(almost) on a 3+ and wound on a 2+ and have a -3 modifier to armour saves, nd those lucky 6's for killing blow will get someone at some point lol
a second vampire will help march oran be kited out to fly around killing warmachines( vargulf my be good accistance)
special units shood be grave guard and additional points on dire wolves to disrupt enemy formations before ur main assault
hope this helps
I would recommend a Varghulf over the Coach. It's far more maneuverable and in my opinion does more damage in combat. It doesn't have as good protection but I think that it is more than worth it. The coach is cool but I think the Varghulf guarantees you more kills. The problem is that it can't negate ranks which sucks.
What you could do is double-team them and stick two Varghulf's on one flank. It's just another option, I wouldn't recommend it. What I would recommend is to have a Varghulf on each flank with a unit of 5 Black Knights with each of them. That will put 2 hard-hitting units on each flank, one can move very fast and gets free pivoting making it very easy to threaten with. The other has strength 6 and killing blow on the charge and can move straight through terrain without penalty, that's a huge asset in a game.
