Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hello ladies and gents. As I was trolling through some of the other forums out there i happened to see one that caught my attention. They had come up with the idea of a zombie launcher to use in game play.
Zombie & Zombie Launcher
So I must admit i do like the idea however I am not sold on it fluff wise (least not how they have it done up anyway). What i would like to do is run some ideas by you guys to see what you think of my revised rules. I only plan on using it in our local gaming group and most have already given their ok so long as it is not rediculous. So here are my ideas.
Zombie Launcher: 175 - 200 pts. (can't decide)
Launcher: M - 4/ WS - - / BS - 2 /S - - / T - 7 / W - 3 / I - - / A - - / LD - 2
Necromancer: M - 4/ WS - 3/ BS - 3 /S - 3 / T - 3 / W - 2 / I - 3 / A - 1 / LD - 7
Zombies: M - 4/ WS - 1/ BS - 0 /S - 2 / T - 2 / W - 1 / I - 1 / A - 1 / LD - 2
Takes up 1 hero choice and one rare choice
Unit Size: not sure how to decide this but im guessing 7-8 (1 per zombie, 1 for necro, and either 1 or 2 for the launcher)
Crew: 5 Zombies and 1 Necromancer (Necromancer does not count as one of the models when trying to move the zombie launcher)
Weapons and Armor: None
Upgrades: Terrifying, Extra Bodies
Special Rules: Undead Ammunition, Zombie Launcher Necromancer
The Zombie Launcher requires a minimum of 5 zombies in order to move in the movement phase.
The Zombie Launcher may not move and shoot. This includes if the unit has moved magicaly.
The entire unit is classed as the units crew, however crmbling wounds cannot be passed onto the Zombie Launcher. All crumbling wounds must be taken by zombies first, if the combie unit is fully destroyed for any reason the Zombie Launcher is automatically destroyed.
The Launcher may not fire in close combat
The Necromancer may not be upgraded with any wargear
The Zombie Launcher may be upgraded with the Terrifying ability for 20 pts. If the zombie launcher is upgraded this way it gains the Terror special rule that can be found in the main rule book. In addition to this any unit that suffers a casualty takes a -1 to their panic test.
You may purchase extra zombie models to add to the unit at 4 points per zombie (max of 5 zombies). These models are added to the unit the same way as if they were forming around a Corpse Cart.
The Zombie Launcher fires by cramming zombies into the cannon and using the magic of the necromancer to fire them across the battle field at their foes.
The Zombie Launcher fires in the magic phase and may be shot only by casting the "Shoot" spell by the necromancer. This shot does not scatter if the test is passed.
To fire the Zombie launcher remove as many zombies as you would like from the unit (max of 4 zombies) to be launched toward the enemy.
1 zombie removed = S3 small blast template (S6 if under middle hole in template)
2 zombies removed = S4 small blast template (S8 if under middle hole in template)
3 zombies removed = S5 small blast template (S10 if under middle hole in template)
4 zombies removed = S6 small blast template (S10 if under middle hole in template)
Additional zombies cannot be loaded if it would bring the unit to less than 5 zombies.
Shots by the Zombie Launcher count as magical.
If the target unit suffers any casualties as a result of the attack, it must immediately take a panic test.
Zombie Launcher Necromancer
The Necromancer is required to fire the Zombie launcher and has the same stats as a regular Necromancer except knows 2 spells, Invocation of Nehek, and "Shoot". The necromancers spells can only affect the Zombie Launcher squad. If Invocation of Nehek or Shoot spells are used on any other unit they will have no effect.
Invocation of Nehek: as per Vampire counts codex page 38
Shoot: the casting difficulty is determined by the ammount of zombies sacrificed in order to fire the Zombie Launcher.
1 zombie removed = 5+
2 zombie removed = 6+
3 zombie removed = 7+
4 zombie removed = 8+
Well there you have it. Long story short i did not like the idea of having a Rock Lobber type of unit in the army and wanted it to be more of a Culdron of blood or Casket of skulls kind of unit. I think this way too also fits fluff a little better. Again these are just some of the changes i would make. Feel free to comment or suggest changes you would make. I am not terribly good at determining what points costs should be so please be kind when suggesting points costs lol i do not mean for it to be overpowered by any means, i am just looking to try something different and fun. Not to mention i absolutly love the thought of seeing zombies being fired across the battle field. Thanks in advance guys.
I actually laughed at this. Is it a joke? It looks like someone overheard people talking about WoC's "Exalted Hero Cannon" and thought that it was a fluff thing.
Altogether, I think that your rules are sound, but how many points are you going to make it?
Yeah once i read the original thread i imediately started laughing at the thought of zombies flying across the battle field but couldn't help think how bad ass it would be to see a hell cannon type device stuffed full of zombies launching them across the board. After telling a friend of mine about this we had started talking about different rules for it and came up with the rules posted above. And i think that after im done working on my current skeleton unit it will be the next thing i build lol.
And as for the points i was thinking around 175-200ish. The terrifying upgrade would be for about 20 points.
I know the whole idea does not fit the VC fluff but we tried to make it fit a little better than what was originaly posted. Anyway thanks for your imput and i am glad somebody else does not think the rules for it sounds too crazy.
Firstly this is really cool and I will probably convert something like this for a unit of zombies some time, even if I just count them as regular zombies. Couple Questions.
1. wat size base? I am guessing a large monster base that sits behind 5 zombies
2. How does adding zombies to this unit work? I know you can buy up to 5 more, but can you use invocation to get unlimited zombies?????
3. So does the thing 'shoot' in the shooting phase or does it only use the 'shoot' spell in the magic phase to shoot?
I think 175, and another 20 for terrifying is reasonable for this unit, although I would always have the new zombies created as a result of deaths worth 50 points, like in the rule book, just to be super fair, as this unit doesn't actually exist.....
Ollie Bollie to answer your questions:
1 - The model was going to be on the same base as the corpse cart (myself personally was going to modify a chaos hell cannon with zombie arms and legs and such hanging out the end of the cannon with additional zombies crawling up the side looking like they are trying to crawl in the cannon).
2 - as for adding more zombies to the squad you can use the necromancer to summon more as he has the IoN spell or any other caster from your army to bolster the squad size using IoN of course.
3 - The cannon would "shoot" in the magic phase as it is the magical powers of the necromancer that are hurling the undead across the battle field. (hence the increasing difficulty as your add more zombies to the shot. Taking more magical power to fire them down field)
On a another note i have been doing some thinking and instead of using the small blast template perhaps making it do something like D6+5 hits or something at a straight up damage as per the chart (no double str though). What are your thoughts on that ?

I'd just like to add in that the zombie launcher was originally not supposed to be used in the VC army. An entire army book is gradually being produced over at Carpe Noctem, focusing around Nagash's Legions. It contains some living troops which will divert it somewhat from the other undead factions, giving it some fresh options.
I do like the rules you've deviced for it yourself though, make no mistake.
Thanks master spark. However I cannot take all the credit for those rules as i had taken some from the CN forum and added a few of my own ideas with some friends. As for this Legion of nagash codex you guys are writing, is there a beta copy of it out right now or is not able to be viewed by others such as myself? I must admit it sounds really interesting.
Everything should be viewable to everyone and there's no beta copy that I know of. Not enough stuff has been voted through yet to make playtesting much of a point, heheh. Feel free to check in and give your input, it's always needed.
I would rather see teh Zombie launcher as a Charnel launcher, launching potentially still (un)living zombie parts at the enemy, so pie-plate attack like a rock lobber, but lower intensity splash damage and maybe D6 zombie attacks?
The thing could even be an addition to teh Corpse Cart, essentially a corpse cart with a delivery mechanism!

I still only think this is worth it if zombies are raised from inflicted casualties. I would say that there must be at least 4 casualties, that will form 4 + D3 zombies, 1 inches away.
