I am participating in a Mighty Empires campaign. If you start a new army you get 2 map tiles, my question is what would i take in a 500 point vampires list, needing at least 2 cores and a Hero?
I just played a 500 point, and it went pretty well. Here's what I built my list around.
2 squads of Core, 10 apiece - only one kind, however.
Pick - either a Corpse Cart or 5 man unit of Black Knights. You may want to include the Corpse Cart if you use ghouls, so they can get the most out of their ranks. You probably don't have the space for any upgrades.
2 Vampires. You won't have much to work with, but if you rely on using a Master power for whichever core you chose, and a small amount of protection or increased damage you'll be ok. Something like the Flayed Hauberk or Accursed Armour would be invaluable at this point cost.
You'll have at least 4 dice and a Bound spell to keep those units in good shape. The Black Knights will take care of anything that you can't with the core. You could put Dread Knight on one of the vampires instead of a Master power and give the hammer some extra punch, as well.
Hope that helps!
In variation of Draconia's list, try this:
Min (10) Skeletons
Min (10/20) Skeletons or Zombies
both of same type OR a unit of xx and a unit of zombies. I would again vote for ghouls, since they're cheap and dangerous.
Now- a Vampire:
Dark Acolyte (lvl2), Lord of the Dead (or equivalent), Tomb Blade, Enchanted Shield
and a Necromancer:
IoN, Raise Dead, Night Shroud, Book of Arkhan or Scepter de Noirot, mounted on a Corpse Cart
Finally, round off your army with either of the following regiments if you have space (probably won't):
5 Black Knights w/ Standard of Hellish Vigor
xx Grave Guard w/ Banner of the Dead Legion (or whichever one doubles your US, i don't have my book on me right now)
The Necromancer on the Cart allows it to join units, which is going to help keep it safe. It can also go free-roaming if you'd prefer it, but you can atleast hide it in a unit for a while. This will also get you ranks much faster, by displacing about 10 models. Your big focus is raising a unit of zombies with that Necromancer, and quickly boosting them. You want a big unit here that can tarpit the kind of stuff that your core units are able to deal with.
Your Vampire can use the Tomb Blade to raise Skeletons beyond their starting size, as it functions like IoN and he can use IoN to boost.
Vampires are very tough to use at such a small size, because our characters are so expensive and our core are "overpriced" because they pay for their ability to be raised up. Really, the only way to earn back points for our core is to raise each one twice. At 500pts, we lack any of our 'hard hitters', so we're going to be stuck trying for Miasma off the Cart, and kills of the Vampire to win our fights.
it wont be so hard soon, every week it goes up 250 pts, so it will be easier the longer it goes,
Heroes, im thinking 1 Vamp and a Necro on corpse cart, quick question if you put a Necro on a Corpse cart can it take the Lodestone?
Core: im thinking either 10 skeletons and 20 zombies or 10 skeletons and 10 ghouls
Special: a small unit of Grave Guard
If you take the cart, yes, you can upgrade it. And please- take the 10 Skeletons and 20 Zombies, or two units of 10 Skeletons. I'd actually lean towards the 10 Skeletons.
You can only afford 1 master power, and as I said, our core units are overpriced because we're expecting to regen them. Unfortunately, in games this size, this makes or breaks our army. We have a distinct advantage if we can make bigger units and raise new ones. If we can't, we are at a severe disadvantage because we are HIGHLY outnumbered.
If you have the points for that unit of Grave Guard, I say jump to it. The Lodestone is less important, as you'll be rocking more magic than everyone but MAYBE the demons player. I would try my hardest to get a decent sized regiment of those guys, or put the Cart there with a NightShroud on the Necro, to make the unit "seem" bigger.
if I have spare points should i upgrade my units by just upsizing them or adding some banners and commands?
Try for the Unit Strength banner if you can. You might have to skimp points somwhere. So far, you haven't given us a concrete list of what you're going to use.
If you do have the extra points, a champion is your first bet. We can IoN our champions back, and they keep our characters safe from challenges. Answer with the champion, take your knocks, and raise him back.
Banners come next, because we can always get more models, and our banners come back as well. We need as much combat resolution as we can get.
the campaign starts in april so i have plenty of time to get ready and i have a birthday and christmas in between now and then so I should have a large army ready in time for it, i will try and get the army list ready within the next two weeks, another question is; when it goes up another 250 pts what should i add? im thinking upsize the skeletons and replace the necro with another vamp
