What is the best units for hunting down the annoying gun crews. I've heard various suggestions about Fel Bats and Black Knights, but i wondered is there anything else useful that can take em out and what is the best option?
If i'm a priest, i'm not a saint.
I would say......... *Drum-drummm*
Just summon a unit in front of the gunline... I assure you that they will shoot at the unit
//Nagash, the Master of Undeath
a) fell bats. they're fast, and being flying cav they also count as skirmishers meaning they're harder to hit with missile fire! just watch out for things that auto-hit like ratling guns, magic missiles and such...
b) vargulf. not quite as fast as the fell bats, but it causes Terror as a plus! it might just scare off the shooters without even having to commit it to combat too! (a good thing because they'll also case the enemy right off the table due to hatred...)
c) vampire w/hunter in the dark + infinite hatred + talisman of lycni + armour of night + sword of batle. basically, elves at long range need 6's to hit this little bugger! anything with BS3 needs at best a 6 to-hit with missile weapons!
with 4 attacks and re-rolls to-hit, you'd have to seriously fluff your rolls to lose combat... still, watch out for those annoying auto-hit attacks like magic missiles which will make very short work of your poor vampire...
d) vampire w/ghoulkin power + 12-16 strong ghoul unit. they start the game 8" closer, meaning with a handy casting of vanhel's they've likely hit things like the enemy's fast cavalry/march blockers/skirmishers on turn 1... (all these units are typically very squishy) a good overrun/pursuit roll and you're right in those missile troops collective face!
being T4 and immune to psych, they'll live against all but the most concerted shooting phase and then get their revenge next turn!
e) vampire on hellsteed w/wristbands of black gold + fighty powers. (ie: avatar + hatred). good luck shooting him down! that ward save is just grossly good... plus he still can throw out 4-5 attacks total should you give him the sword of battle! and don't forget that his poney gets hatred too!
hope this helps,
thanks for all the ideas guys, i adore using zombies so i'll definately give that a try, but the speed ideas of flyers/speed ones are v good so ill try them until i find one that works reliably
a raised unit of zombies are the worst possible choice because it's basically handing your opponent a 'free' 50 VP's! a clever opponent will catch onto what you're upto, and stop you from invocation spaming the newly raised regiment! (leaving you with at best, 8 very squishy targets at close range...)
come their turn, those 5-8 zombies will bite the dust again, but your opponent will gain a valuable 50 VP's for those 8 guys!!! (who by the way, are worth about half that normally!)
zombies are the very last choice, and then, only if you're general is really in danger, or you're about to lose say an entire unit of blood knights to a pesky bolt thrower...
and while you might not think that 50 VP's is any big deal, keep in mind that in a close game, it can mean the difference between victory or defeat! (especially if you've raise say 3-4 units which have then been wiped out as that's now 150-200 'free' VP's you gave away!)
Just as 626 said. Do not throw the unit away! Try to use it wisely; when your unit is risking being wiped out by one turn, just cast a Summon Undead Horde - wipe THAT out
It needs some practice to control the Zombie summons, but when you can master it, it will become a good trade with 50 VP for (say) 150 at least
//Nagash, the Great Necromancer
which is way better for us anyways as you restore/raise D6 per IoN instead of just one.
3 IoN's later with a corpse cart nearby and your 60 pt fell bat unit is now 10 models strong. have fun destroying those cannons. i hate cannons by the way, my general never looks out.
but, they still opperate as skirmishers and thus they gain a 360 line of sight and inflict a -1 to-hit penalty against shooting attacks! combine this with their 20" charge, and they are without doubt the very best unit we have for hunting down missile troops!
BTW, never, ever go by the 'quick reference' page on the back cover for rules, as they are always full of errors! fell bats are most certainly NOT! infantry... check their unit entry, and their beastiary entry.
