Because I've been doing the same thing for too long I've been changing up my hero builds and in a 2000 pt game I had this to throw into the fray:
sword of king, accursed armor, skeletal steed
flight, flayed hauberk, sword of striking
dark acolyte, lord of the dead, book of arkhan, black periapt
extra magic level, helm, sword of might, night shroud, crown of the damned
infinite hatred, beguile, supernatural horror, lord of the dead
The king goes with a unit of black knights with the banner of the barrows and the vampire lord is nearby to make everybody usually hit on 2's. The vamp lord is with a unit of grave guard who have the banner of undead legion to usually autobreak all but the most determined enemies to free up the lord into being able to use the helm. I wanted to try a balanced lord and I think he has a good range of support and close combat bite but I may end up dropping beguile for dark acolyte.
I've only used the flying vampire once and he caused some problems but wasn't too effective but I think that may have been because I didn't know how to pick my targets too well, how is his build? should I change the striking for another sword (such as battle?)
Most Notable Achievements:
Killed a Revenant Titan in one shot.
Killed 900 pts worth of Blood Angels in 2 turns while only loosing 4 pts.
Having the wight king hitting on 4's with the sword of kings is far to unreliable, IMO drop the accursed armour and give him enchanted shield or gem of blood even with the lord there its still not bes to rely on being in his range, as Black Knights are a flanking unit.
Your flying vampire isnt exactly ideal IMO, I'd give him Avatar of Death and Flying Horror along with Flayed Hauberk and give him great weapon, yea he could fluff his attacks but it also gives him more targets (chariots and weakening monsters).
You Caster Vamp is illegal as both Book of Arkhan and Black Periapt are arcane, I'd give him Periapt and a Scroll. Or even better swap him for a necromancer and give him 2 scrolls. IMO
Your lords build is far to jumbled up, hes not good at anything. Combat yea he gets 4 rerollable hits attacking and maybe rerollable wounds but they probably wont kill whats targetting him (expect characters) opening him up to be ripped a new one with only a 4+ ward
Supernatural Horror on a static lord isn't the most ideal choice as the units charging this unit, probably won't care about terror, and your terror wont autobreak anything thus making it more useless static. I would drop the Supernatural Horror.
And dont expect units that charge your Grave Guard to Autobreak, as theyre are most reliable unit, expect chaos knights, black guard etc to charge these guys. Even if they autobreak dont expect to be able to use your lords leadership, as if they were charged then expect your opponent to choose that combat last.
Yea the advice is a bit jumbled at the end there, but i dont think your lord is very reliable. Having a character that is weak in both combat and support is too iffy espcially if your opponent knows VC. Id make him into a caster/support or just caster.
For Caster/Support definately give him the Book of Arkhan as this is the best support item we have IMO, and if you want take the Helm as well (i personally dont like it, it hurts comp far too much)
Mirage nailed most of it
But do NEVER EVER underestimate the powers of Terror! Supernatural Horror is a Perfect VP, if you use it in the right way...
Combine it with AoDM or Doom and Darkness in later games

WiP TK Army!
- additional hand weapon wight kings! items like the gem of blood or rod of flaming death or hand of dust.
- all hellsteed-mounted vampires! really fun when you've got a lord on dragon! take that bretonnian RAF!!!
- use the armour of night! i don't think i've ever really seen it, but the right build makes for a fun little missile hunter.
- take a spectral form lord and run him in a unit of wraiths...
- build an abyssal terror rider. again, due to their squishiness, i've never seen anyone take one... mind, with the right powers & the handy blood drinker, you can create a very effective flying lord that's far cheaper than the dragon option!
- take more necros! always fun to give your little lackies a good showing... sure they don't generate as many dice, but they're cheap and there's actually some pretty good builds out there to check up on and try.
just to chip in a little bit. i have taken an abyssal terror mounted lord several times. i kit him out with the dread lance and wristbands of black gold, the tailsman of lycni, red fury and MotBA, he has worked very well for me in quite a few games, except the one time i charged into a unit of 10 thunderers. oh you hit with 6 shots ok i'm not worried oh 5 on the terror and one on the lord, no worry's you need 5's to wound. oh 5 wounds on the abyssal terror, really........and 3+ ward save on the lord.......fail......really......really really.......i hate dwarfs. but besides that time if the lord dosn't get sniped off of his mount in the first turn or 2 then he is capable of wreaking nearly any unit out there even blocks of core troops. he and his mount are US 5 so negate ranks and you are gonna kill 7 or 8 on the charge and 5 or 6 each subsequent phase of combat. but i rarely take him in less than 3000 pts, as it is to risky for the general to be flying around by himself, one round of really bad rolling and he poofs to CR.
