Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm new to the game and am trying to get the hang of VC.
Been owned by WOC twice due to bad tactical play that I'm trying to fix but I need help with something the books not clear on if anyone could oblige??
Once a VC player loses a combat do they immediately lose wounds equal to the number they lost on resolution? Or do they take a leadership test to see if they would break and if they lose that then lose the wounds?
I've been playing the former way but am thinking about blood knight tactics and have realised if I flanked a big unit of chosen chewing up a unit of Zombies (killing 7 or 10 at a time) and got bad dice with Blood Knights then I could easily lose a unit of five this way, whereas if they were allowed a LD test the chances are they'd pass.
I can swallow losing zombies to combat resolution but 360 points of Blood Knights!??!
Unfortunately, that's exactly how it works. We take wounds based directly on combat resolution, not leadership.
This is why you only want to use Zombies to tie up enemy units. If you plan on actually swinging another regiment in to fight, then you want to use Skeletons or Ghouls as the anvil instead.
Welcome to LO! Hope to see you around
However, good ol' Captain nailed this one before me He is totally right, and I guess it's time for me to retire...

That is possible, but it's not as bad as it seems. Think about it this way. What if you lose combat by 1? In a regular army you could break and flee and get run down or run off the table. Your BKs will lose one model. If you lose by 5, yes, you'll lose a lot of knights but losing by that much all but guarantees a flee in a regular army and you would likely have lost them anyway.
As long as you avoid flank charges and don't charge into suicidal combats you have a pretty big advantage over regular armies subject to psychology.
Tomb Scorpion Kill Counter: Gotrek Gurnisson, Empire Cannon Crew=3, Blood Knights=2, Saurus Cavalry=5, Saurus Warriors=3, Razordons=3, Skink warriors=7, Jezzails=8, Poison Wind Globadiers=10, Warp Lightning Cannon=1
I've put together a Blood Kight unit to limit losses through CR and think it will work pretty well against WOC (my brother in law's army) if anyone has any observations??
5BK with kestellan and sword of battle and royal banner of strigos (360pts)
joined by a Vamp (hero) dread knight with walking death, BSB and banner of dead legion (200pts)
Which would mean on a frenzied round (fighting 6 accross) with charge it's 17 attacks WS 5 ST 7 attacks, 3 WS 6 ST 7 attacks, and 6 WS 3 ST 4 attacks.
I would be running another 2 vamps with helm of commandment so could theoreticall have them fighting on a WS 6 ensuring they get their charge with VDM (if I get the spell with any of the vamps).
And it'd give me a start of 3 to Combat Resolution (prob 4 if Outnumber through banner of dead legion)!!
On a 1500pt game it is a lot of points but my brother in law loves his Knights, Warriors and chosen (using slaneesh-immune to psychology) so I'd have to be hard.
I'd also be running with 20 GG with great weapons (std and champ) then a unit of 10 skels with spears (champ and std) and 10 Crypt ghouls (ghast) (that would hopefully grow very quickly)
The 2 vamps would both be level 2, 1 summon ghouls and 1 lord of dead and obviously giving my core and/or grave guard ws 6 in combat!
Personally, i dont rate kastellans just for the fact that they have to declare a challenge. banner bearers are much better. aslo by putting a BSB in there, you're making the unit 100pts more expensiv (VP style)
spears on skeletons arent that good. all you do is gain attacks that your never going to hit or wound with.
Do you think I should run with two units of crypt ghouls instead of using the skels. 2 attacks, poisen and st 4 make them a better unit but in past using them i found not having a standard hurt me?
sorry i meant toughness 4 for the last post, not st4.
IMO, ghouls are the better choice (T4 making up for the no armour). They hit harder, they hit more often, they hit with more attacks and they enjoy the hitting process. If I didnt already have 120 skeletons, i would use ghouls more often.
They also make up for the standard with hitting power
not to mention they get hit less easily
