I'm fairly new to vc and I'm still puzzling with the items for vampires and such.
That's why I would like your opinions on pure combat and magic vampire (lords)
So in short: How would your ultimate combat/ magic vampire (lord) look like?
Apologies in advance if this is rather a noob question :s. (and if my English is awkward ^^)
I'm a fan of fighting Vampires, so:
Vampire Lord w/ 3rd magic level: Dreadlance, Crown of the Damned, DreadKnight, Red Fury, Walking Death. In my current list, he has Summon Ghouls instead of Walking Death.
"Is Archon Braigh-Dee going to have to choke a Wych?

If you want a vampire specifically for casting, without regard to armor or combat prowess, then I would take:
Vampire Lord, lvl3 upgrade, Master of the Black Arts, Dark Acolyte, Lord of the Dead, Skull Staff, Power Stone, Enchanted Shield, Nightmare
This vampire would have a 4+ armor save, provide 6 power dice plus the Power Stone, have a +1 to Casting and Dispelling, and an additional +1 to the power level of Invocation.
I tend not to run such a vampire, because Lords are typically our generals and we need to protect them. To that end, I use the following combination:
Vampire lord, lvl3 upgrade, Master of the Black Arts, Dark Acolyte, Lord of the Dead, Flayed Hauberk, Helm of Commandment, Staff of Sorcery
This vampire has a 2+ armor save, still provides 6 power dice, still has a +1 to dispel and a +1 to casting IoN, but can also give one regiment within 12" WS7.
You just have to remember that no matter how many pluses you get to a roll, you cannot cast a spell on any roll less than 3. So in the case of the first vampire, you could roll a single die for IoN, get a 3, with +1 for Lord of the Dead making it a 4 (which is enough to get the spell to go off) and then the +1 for the staff making it a 5. You couldn't just cast IoN on a roll of a 2.
Because of that, I don't mind dropping the Skull Staff on my vampire, because the additional +1 doesn't make the spell any easier to cast.
it is true that it dosn't make it easier to cast IoN when using the skull staff ,but it makes it more difficult to dispel, my 3's to cast IoN on my skeleton units need 5's to dispel so in effect nobody ever bothers to dispel it plus during that one phase where you need to get van hals off you get it off on a 6 rather than a 7 a huge difference to me because i roll poorly so the skull staff is almost always a must on my casting vampire lord.
thanks for the answers!
but can you guys also suggest vampire-builds (no lords)?
for the BSB theres always the obvious
Avatar of death
As for a normal vampire, my personal favourite build is total magic so:
lord of the dead/summon ghouls (it depends)
Book of arkhan
Talisman of protection
My favourite vamp build
Sword of Might
Now Vampire Powers make him more interesting
Hunter in the dark and Hatred for warmachine.lone wizard/character hunting
Dark Acolyte and Summon for supporting units (my most often build)
Suppernatural horror works as a nice 18" terror bomb.
Walking death and summon is BSB-in unit of 25 skelies with war banner thats +8 static CR
If i'm a priest, i'm not a saint.
Master of the Black Arts
Lord of the Dead
The Accursed Armour
