Hey guys, I'm looking for some advice here and a search hasn't really brought up anything too helpful yet.
I'm playing a campaign soon and I want to build my list towards having only the more bestial aspects of our army.
This unfortunately means no skeletons, grave guard or black knights. The jury is still out on Ethereals even as I haven't decided, maybe some "counts as" conversions kind of thing with spectral looking animal things.
So, we have lots to choose from in this department and even a nice big scary rare choice as well. But it seems the problem I'm having is it doesn't seem like the army will be quite as capable of dealing or sustaining anywhere near as much damage.
The almost complete lack of armor saves for one makes me nervous. My opponents will be Skaven, DE, and Lizardmen, so all the shooting could become a problem.
My other concern although slightly less so, is the lack of a real hammer unit. Varghulf is great, but isn't really capable of decimating RnF all by itself. Ghouls are pretty good at CC in general and shouldn't be too bad off. I'm just worried about being able to deal enough damage without GW toting GG or Black knights, and I can't make up for it with pure SCR because my RnF will be mostly Ghouls. I just seems like the only things doing any real damage will be my Characters or occasionally the Varg
Any help would be appreciated
I'd say conversions would be the way to go.
Although... to be honest, Knights of the Blood Keep could work as is - they already strike me as somewhat bestial, more concerned with spilling blood than their own survival. That would certainly give you a hammer unit.
But if you didn't want to use them straight up, you could probably convert something to represent them, or to take the place or regular Black Knights if you were happy with them.
I'm trying to think of ideas - The Varghulf is sort of a giant bat-thing, we already have Dire Wolves which for most intents and purposes are wolves....
Are there any decent bear-like models around the place? Undead bears as heavy cavalry? That sounds somewhat passable... Although you could always just armour up some horses a little more, kit them out with some spikes and blades and use them as an unmounted cavalry unit. Armoured spiky horses would surely still do some damage.
Unfortunately the puritan in me wants to try to make a viable army using nothing but the more bestial entries in the army book.Blood knights do fit and are a hell of a hammer as well, so that is an option.
I don't want to break any rules about where to post so I don't want to go into full details over what my WIP list is like so far, but to summarize it anyway I'm thinking 3 units of ghouls, 2 of Dire wolves, 2 corpse carts, 2 of Fell bats, and either 2 Varghulfs or 1 unit of blood knights and then characters for 2250pts
Given their points cost, most of the units will be fairly large for what they are, so we'll see how they work as the campaign progresses as it is an escalation campaign.Any further help is appreciated
