This is the start of a new series, that will hopefully bring new ideas and tactics to the forums. Each week, a new topic will be posted up about a different unit in the army book. This gives you your chance to discuss the unit to its fullest. So, please leave your comment!
This week's topic is - Grave Guard
How many do you take per unit? Are the command options worth the points? What banner is best used with them? Is the great weapon option worth the extra points? Tactics?
What do you want from? Hammer or Anvil?
Hammer; There are several options here. Going with Great Weapons is by no means a no-brainer. They are perfectly able to deal with most units with the HW and shield. Especially since they'll sport a very impressive save. The banner of choice is probably not hard to guess, namely, the Banner of Barrows. More hits, more rolls to wound = more kills = happy vampire players.
If you go with Great weapons I suggest fielding them in a wider frontage of 6-7 wide. You will take more casualties to the more models standing ready to swing their GWs the better. 6 wide is probbaly 'the best' choice as it doesn't compromise movement too much.
If you also put a Wight King in this unit will make for a deadly unit indeed. If ontop of this you decide to field a Vampire Lord/Vampire with Helm of Commandment the unit wil truly shine.
Anvil; It isn't much different from the HW+Shield unit to be honest, and if you got the Helm nearby it will probably suffice. The only real difference is the banner. War Banner. The unit is already tough enough to withstand alot of abuse and also have alot of static CR.
One of my favourite units in the VC army. Not because of being overly powerful but through imagery and how it completements the rest of my army.
""What's the matter? Don't ya like clowns? Don't we make ya laugh?" - Captain Spaulding.
i have to agree with danceman, grave guard are a staple unit.
i will more then not take them as my hammer unit with GW, full command, unit of 22 with my lord and BSB in there going 6 wide. i give the unit the royal banner of stirgos (mostly because i like telling people i hate them when rolling to hit). BSB take the drakenhof banner and the lord will usually have walking death for the bonus combat res. i've been hit on all sides and the unit will just laugh and brush off the worst of the enemy.
I usually stick a lvl 4 caster unit in a 5x4 great weapon unit of them along with a bsb thats also lvl 2 with drakenhoff. Makes for one of the sickest units. I've literally taken charges from the front and both flanks before, made it through the first round pretty dang easily, then invoked the heck out of the unit and proceeded to slaughter after dancing the unit.
Amazing unit. Although reading this topic makes me want to get another one and give them HW+shield and barrows.
Roses are Red
Violets are Blue
If I'm Schizophrenic
Then I am too!
I take a unit of 23 hw and shields (just cos i had the points spare after just 20 ), with a white king on b-steed bsb with drakenhoff banner for regen, then sit my lvl 3 lord with 1+ armour, 5+ ward and regen from the banner in thier. Chose Royal banner of Strigos for hatred as it means my lord gets it without having to take infinate hatred but im still playing around with it.
This unit stands up to anything, in two GT games against daemons its dropped both a Keeper who got in my flank, and a bloodthirster who got in the rear whislt having flesh hounds in both a flank and front. I've tried GWs but too often it means dice i could be using to raise my skeleton units are waisted on a unit that with shields would have made twice as many saves, or at least had an opertunity of one.
If anything i love to sit them between 2 units of skeletons each with a vampire in, then when an option to charge a unit comes up the opponent nearly always goes for the skeletons, just for my lord to make them WS7 with crown, and find that respectivly the Skeleton uint have either War banner or Banner of Endless nightmare, for a static res of often 6 as they get outnumber having been raised to 30-35 strong.

For larger units of GG (12+) I usually go with the sword and board. For smaller units, I like GW.. I use these guys like a cheaper, slower, easier to raise version of Black Knights. The Strigoi Banner is probably my favorite with these guys, because it's awesome to reroll misses with a unit that has Killing Blow.
Note.. the Banner of the Barrows and the Helm of Commandment work well together... generally 2+ to hit if one of your Vamps is wearing the Helm.
