I'm currently in the process of mustering a vampire counts army. I have returned to the hobby after a 10 year break so alot of the undead units of old have changed somewhat (as well as the rules).
Basically one things lead to another this weekend and in a moment of inspiration/madness my initial tests at building some spirit hosts from old empire models has totally gotten out of hand.
I'm loving the look of the ghostly imperial regiment and coupled with all the spare imperial bits i'm now looking at fielding 2 units of spirit hosts (one 4 strong with an Etheareal VAmp heading it & one 5 strong)
On the table it will look good as its a regiment of ghosts complete with comander, drummers, ranks etc, however from a gaming point of view is 9 in a 2000pt army viable or just plain bonkers?
I strongly advise you not to plan on putting a vampire in them. They can crumble incrediblby fast since they don't have static resolution and since they are not the same base size, he will not get a look out sir roll.
ye, a unit of 6 and a unit of 3 would be better, having a unit of big bases 5 wide is a bit unwieldy. And they won't stand up to the more common big units with their static CR, they will need backup, but then again a supporting unit will get attacked by the enemy and still potentially lose combat. Magic will probably be seeing a lot of play as well, and it's strong enough to wipe out a unit of 3 in one go nowadays. My old favorite use for them was a bit of a shield from shooting and zooming up flanks, but with 8th ed you might even want to consider a unit of 9 for better static CR. Only one way to find out
I like your idea, im not useing a single spirit host model for mine, especialy at £10.50 a pop!!
Iv gone with, Flagelants(spelling!) The Jester Model, The new Empire merchant and scribe and so on!
Im bowling with 6 as said befor!
PROUD TO BE IN THE BRITISH ARMY.

i hate to be the killjoy here, but your plan won't work at all - spirit hosts are now unit type 'swarms' in 8th, and thus they suck balls at being even remotely usefull in any kind of way... (ie: if i want and ethereal skirmish screen now, i'll happily take some wraiths who will also kill some shit before dying horrendously to magic!)
I haven't read the new rules in detail yet, what difference will being a swarm actually make?
- harder to hit with missile weapons
- free reforms on the move
- can march & still shoot missile weapons
the negatives for skirmishers in 8th;
- they now have the 'unstable rule' and crumble like undead when defeated in combat
- can never gain ranks bonus
- can never negate the enemy's ranks
- never gain the bonuses for 'disrupting' enemy ranks (ie: flank & rear charge CR bonus)
- are never able to gain the steadfast ability since they have no ranks of their own
so yep, swarms are even worse now than they currently are in 7th! seems like GW doesn't want anyone to use swarms - an unbreakable unit that crumbles away within a single turn because they're almost always T2?! good job on that one guys!
I'm confused... what are the rules for swarm bases? or do swarm bases now have to deploy as skirmishers?
a) skirmishers (so they move & act as skirmishers obviously!)
b) unbreakable ('cause they're just not that bright!)
c) squish! ('cause everything runs them over...)
note that swarms are still immune to killing blow however - though it's not really a good thing, since they're still just as useless... you won't even get cover from swarms since they're so small, so screening tactics are fairly pointless too!
