Been putting together my VC list in alignment with the new rules. I'm back after a 10 year absence so the % rules are very familiar to me as that's where I left the game, however the Core/Special/Rare is a new feature and I must admit i'm finding that most of the bits i want all seem to reside in the Rare section.
Between the Varghulf, Cairn Wraiths and Blood Knights I want to field; even in 2000pts i'm finding the best I can manage is 2 out of 3 each time. I've even taken to 'cheating' and doing things like making my 5th bloodknight the Vampire battle standard bearer so part of my hero's allocation.
Equally in the special section a small unit of 12 grave guard 'fillers' is all i seem to want to use.
It didn't really hit home till i was looking at the Chaos Warriors list for another army im considering, here it was the reverse and I couldn't really see anything in the Rare section i wanted to roll out?
Once you play a few games with the Cairn Wraiths and Blood Knights, you may change your mind.
If you are looking for powerhouse units, the rare section is the only place where VC has them. Since chaos relies on brute force, you find it in it's troops and special. Different armies have different balancing factors.
Its not so much a specific tactical 'need', more that the things that I felt I wanted to include from both an aesthetic and game play point of view all seemed to be in that section.
I still like the idea of an ethereal troop as i think thats got 'real world' shock value in terms of confusing an enemy for a vital turn or two. As for a Varghulf and Blood knights: Ones a giant bat-orge and the others are vampiric knights..... who wouldn't want that?
I did consider that but as i had a wadge to spend of VC stuff i decided to take the plunge and get the proper blood knights. In fairness looking at them yesturday i was very pleased with the models but i can certainly understand why at less than 1/4 of the price the chaos knight approach is appealing!
I also indulged in a corpse cart, 10 ghouls, a varghulf and 20 empire milita (to take my ghostly 'counts-as'skeletons' unit to 40 strong)
Overall the force is looking quite healthy (?!) as I have about 75% of the army list units as an option open to me now
On the flip side, I just spend 120$ to make my zombie dragon. I bought the two headed chaos dragon, Vlad Von Carstein a pair of Balrog wings and a body to mount/dismount.
I've got a zombie dragon underway myself, in my case though i've dug out the old Emperor dragon model that was sat in my parents loft for the last few years.
This is the only picutre I could find of it on the web (not of my actual model). Just trying to find a decent sized container to strip it as its almost 12" nose to tail.
