A rather extensive forum this...
I was pondering using a combat lord on foot in my infantry based army.
In the rear a beast magic wielding vampire would be lurking.
The lord would have red fury and blood drinker in addition to the usual allotment of defensive gear. Also a potion of strength for the tough opponents.
I suspect he will spend most of his time in a largish gw wielding GG unit.
If I manage to cast beast of horros on him he will be awesome.
Then it occured to me that, maybe, he would actually benefit from a lower I through the Accursed armour. I mean the blood drinker is useless if the unit is unhurt. Perhaps it's better to let some of the foes strike before the vampire... Of course, +1T also helps.
Is it just foolish to think that a lower I would be a benefit?
Unless the Vampire is in with a unit of Blood Knights the Blood Drinker Sword is kind of unnecessary...that's what IoN is for.
Personally, I would tell you to get a better Magic Weapon and keep the initiative, you should never hope to be hurt in a fight...kind of backwards thinking if you ask me.
I think the loss of WS is more of a concern though as it helps protect and get kills for your blood drinker. Keep in mind that even I 4 is higher than most troops.
Have to agree, keeping the general safe should be first priority with our army!
Personally I give my combat lord sword of might (+1 S) to go to S6, which wounds on 2's against most models that I'll let my lord get into combat with.
Well, surely +1T helps to protect the vampire.
The bloodknight argument is solid, and I suppose the same would go for black knights.
I've played a couple of games and those GGs surely die fast to ranged attacks.
Perhaps a unit of 14 BlackKnights is preferable to the 29 horde GGs?
I will need more testing.
Back up your GG with a BSB with the DrakenHof Banner, and you're fine.
Throw a Vampire in there with the BloodDrinker if you'd like, but he's not really needed.
The old school GG bunker has still worked fine for me- it's the rest of the army that's letting me down...
My rather brick vampire lord has:
Ogre blade (s7)
Flayed hauberk (2+ armour)
Crimson gem of lahmia (bounceback wounds, useful in challeges)
Infinite hatred, (hatred...)
Red fury (lots of attacks. )
She can quite easily dish out about 5 or 6 wounds a turn ussually ignoring armour, and she survives quite well.
If you want the extra toughness just take Lore of Beast...+1 T and +1 S and then give the +3 attack Sword (Sword of Bloodshed) combine with Red Fury and Infinite Hatred and hit puree. Can you say +5 CR on challenges. (I know there are exceptions, but still, it is solid)
