Was woundering with 8th edition if anyone has had any success or tactics on how to use black knights?
Is having etherial movement a difference maker anymore? what kind of size units work well that kind of thing.
Thanks for any info you could share.
Cavalry got nerfed hard in 8th. Black Knights are no exception. You need to rank them up in order to negate the enemies ranks. They have low initiative so they are guaranteed to go last and their weapon skill is less than desirable. For the same points as a kitted out BK unit, you can have 5 blood knights that will likely have better luck in combat.
I have used them a bit in 8th and don't think they do well unless you are prepared to sink a lot of points into them.
In larger games (2.5k+) I have fielded them in a unit of 28 with a wight king and wight king BSB with banner of blood keep, in horde formation.
It isn't cheap and attracts a lot of fire, but helmed and vanheled, it will strike 1st, with 35 attacks at strength 6, killing blow and hatred, there are very few units that will be still standing after that and those that are wont be steadfast any more, so I find them useful for smashing through a line in a single turn.
Although they attract a lot of fire, they have never made it into combat with fewer than 10 men let, and that was against gunline dwarfs.
But the best thing about them is ethereal movement, which gets rid of the big problem of cavalry hordes, maneuverability.
Their ability to move through terrain is situational and barely offsets their weak combat stats.
make it a unit of 10-15
ethereal means in most armies "i cant hit them AT ALL"
so if you fight against empire or other magic heavy armies
make sure u dispell DD's or MM's b4 they hit u
and dont rake 'em against demons
i prefer GG cus they our only reliable hammer unit
they only count as ethereal for movment purpose's due to their mounts.
