Just decided on VC for my second army. (My 1st is Empire & Ive only been playing since 8th edition.) I had an idea after reading the book of what I wanted my army to look like but everywhere I look online esp. at the vampirecounts.net site it seems like everything I'm tryna do is a terrible idea. I'm still hammering out the exact points but my 2500pt list looks like this:
Vampire Lord - Red Fury, DA, Flayed Hauberk, Crown of the Damned, and then either Sword of Kings and Other Tricksters Shard or Sword of Might and Dispel Scroll. I'm having trouble deciding between the Killing Blow lord or the added magic defence.
Vampire - Dread Knight, Blood Drinker, and maybe Dragonhelm if I can find 10 pts.
Vampire - MotBA, Armour of Silvered Steel. I really don't like spending 45pts on it but I cantt think of a better way to protect him.
WK - BSB, Drakenhof
2 units of 30 to 35 skeletons
26 to 30 GG with GW
5 Blood Knights
I know I want to avoid a "deathstar" approach. I like having multiple threats, like the Blood Knights, the Varghulf, the Grave Guard, and my general I was going to put into a Skeleton unit. With enough shooting they may be able to drop one but not all four threats. But it seems like I'm breaking some of the VC rules, like don't use hybrid lords, use Forbidden Lore, use Ghouls, don't use Blood Knights, use 2 Varghulfs together ect. What are some other opinions? Any suggestions to help me finish my list & not auto lose every game I play?
Vampire Lord is lvl 3 or 4 caster? I would take the Sword of Might as S6 is pretty good at getting through armour and you never know when you might need the Scroll, however both options are good.
All your Characters look good.
2 units of 35 skeletons(full command) is too few points to meet your core requirements unless you add a magic banner or one unit has spears. I personally would go with a larger units of skeletons and a unit of Ghouls for versatility.
29 GG with GW in horde formation is quite good. Give them the banner of the Barrows and have your wight king join them making the unit 30 strong.
Blood Knights should have standard and musician plus the Flag of Blood Keep, obviously your Dread Knight joins this unit.
Varghulf is good just be careful as he is more fragile than he seems.

You need I think at least 2 more units for your core. Though I am unaware of whatever it is apbevan is talking about with the adding a banner or giving spears to nullify that. That I have never ever heard of, it sounds like crazy talk
"To Triumph without Risk, is to Conquer without Glory!"
Apbevan means that due to new rules in 8th you need to take 25%+ of your points as core at 2.5k this would be 625
2 units of skeles 35 strong with Full comand weigh in at 600 points this is 25 points Short! of the Minimum that is required for a legal core tot he army now if he where to add a 25 point banner to a unit that would be 625 Exactly or put spears on a unit this would push it up a little more making his core selection Legal.
However like he also said a single unit of 50 Skeletons with full comand and a unit of 30+ Ghouls would give more versatillity Skeletons are awesome becuase they get full command which adds to fortitude in Blood and Glory. Crypt Ghouls however have 2 attacks each for front rank and Posioned attacks so rolling a 6 to hit is a nice automatic wound.
50 Horde Skeletons - HW+S - 30 attacks witha 6++ in combat
50 Horde Skeletons - Spear - 40 Attacks but loose the use of the shield droping the 6++ in combat
30+ Horde Crypt Ghouls - nothing you can do here - 40 Attacks with Posion rule
throw in the Lore of light spell for WS + I 10 and maybe Mindrazor (this works with general LD if in range even if hes not in unit) granting WS10 I10 S9/10 Poion attacks now if you can get the Corpse carts AS / van hels Danse or Light ASF spell off also your getting to re-roll 1/2's and every 6 you roll is an Auto wound witha -6/7 Armour save modifier heavy cav Where
MotBA is ebtetr on a lord to be honest as it takes up every last ounce of a counts power points while it can be a complete god send you're betetr off with either Avatar of death to make combat hero's or forbiden lore so you have a whole list of spells to play with. Just remember MotBA only gives those two PD to the vamp with the power so its better to give to some one with more Base spells if possible.
Gw on GG are fine if you know your fighting any one with I4+ or dont have the above combo of spells to throw out although Killing Blow is Killign Blow no matter what and the Parry save works better than +2S in my oppion you'd be supprised just how many 6++ you can actually make.
