I've been painting miniatures for 25years but never actually got in to playing Warhammer. Just tended to buy stuff I liked the look of to paint.
Now my kids are getting into Warhammer 40k so I thought i'd dig the old figures out and see if I can educate them into playing fantasy .
Will be buying the Army book next week and the new rules (my rule book is early 90's) but i'd like some advice on what troops to purchase.
So far over the years i've acquired
17 zombies including command
34 skellys with spears inc command
2 skull throwers
6 skelly cavalry
1 mounted necromancer
1 vampire lord
Vlad and Isabella Von Carpark
and some evil bloke on a dirty great manticore
Not even sure if that lot is Vampire Counts or Tomb Kings mainly as there was only one book whan i bought them.
So any suggestions on how to flesh an army out would be appreciated, ultimately want to aim for 3000 points and I'd prefer not to paint too many horses if possible.
Also would like similar advice on Empire , but will stick that in the Empire section.
Well its a mix of both Tomb Kings and Vampire counts so you could really go both ways.
In what army too choose its all about what you think seems most fun. So my advice would be to check out both the TK and VC book. Read the fluff, army entries and rules and get a feel for the armies. When thats done you have to choose what army to collect.
Personally...VC was the way to go for me since its not ALL bone. TK is bones bones and you guessed it, more bones VC mixes it up a little and is more versitile to paint and collect.
Also if you intend to start playing, VC is more forgiving to play than TK. If you mess up with TK you may well loose the game.
Both are infantery heavy armies, both have cavelry and tough heroes with a lot of magic too keep them going ang going. Though something that makes me want to switch from Vamps to TK is that VC have no shooting. It's very annoying to know that i dont get to use one of the phases in the game =/
I could go on and on but ill sum up the key points i guess.
1: Read the codexes and get an opinion about the armies.
2: Check out the models and army lists that might seem fun to field.
3: Go with your gut and really try to take the army that speaks to you.
Hope it helps and its nice to see more liches join the never ending horde!
Thanks for the reply, I'm finding myself strangely drawn towards Tomb Kings. Maybe the proliferation of Vampires on TV/Movies is something to do with it.
there's alot of hints that the basic skeleton frames & the tomb guard will get new and much improved plastics! still, it's not too hard to use some extra bitz from the chariot sets to 'khemri'fy' the VC skellies either! (i've been mixing both ranges for my lahmian army, and the egyption style bits work fairly well...)
