Hello I'm just wondering is anyone still taking combat lords into a game, or has it all been moved to Casting lords?
What's a good build/unit composition in your opinion?
Lots have transferred into caster lords...but i cant see why. Asked this question this question before but i still prefer my killy guy.
Vampire Lord 380
2+ streangth weapon (forgot the name)
Crown of the Damned
or my Killing Blow speciealist
Vampire Lord 385
Dark Aura of Majesty
Sword of Kings
Armour of Night
Crown of the Damned
If you want you can plunk down an extra magic level on them if you feel like it, but i never do. Lots of points.
So the first one is just an out right killing machine. No finess, tactics or subtility. He just slaps everything around and has fun doing so ^^
Ya ive seen him take down a Chaos Lord in a Juggernaught and other nasty things. Red Fury works well when your hitting everything with ST7 and all that. Plus he is strolling around with a 2+ 4++, he wont go down fast.
The other guy is the polar opposite from his comrad over there. So he kills heroes and lords...thats his job and there aint a better guy at doing so tbh.
If they fail a leadership test at -4 you can re-roll to wound. And all 6's are killing blows.
Your armour makes you always hit first, Always!. Problem is that he dies if they hit back. Its sort of an all or nothing kind of hero but is really scary when he succeds.
What units do you keep with your Dread Knight Lord? in a unit of foot? or with Black Knight / Blood knights? lol I'm always worried that he'll get snipped off. easily
My lords tooled for mopping up units and tanking Killing blow.
My only fear is losing my lord to an unlucky Killing Blow :/ so Im always at 5+/4++ w/ Drakenhoff
Sword of + 2 attacks
Potion of Strength (for the odd Dragon)
Crown of Damned
This mops up Dark elves like no tmr lol, killed an entire unit of Killing Blowed Black Guard, and then a KB dragon lord w/ potion the next turn haha
Though not great for stuff T4 +
I'm reallying liking your KB specialist btw, challenge everything with this build lol
if i run a combat lord, i prefer to either run him as part of a bloodbus (blood knight unit) or else beef-up some grave guard...
either way, he always gets red fury & blood drinker plus whatever else tickles my fancy at the time, while his unit carries the razor standard for the armour piercing attacks. he's not the outright killiest, but that's what his unit is for! his job is to keep the unit healed in combat through his own kill tally.
works wonders in a bloodbus as he alone can bring the entire unit back from the brink.
I love the Blood Knights but they have a problem that a lot of Knight units have.
Their are expensive... VERY EXPENSIVE! And as so, they will get attacked by anything and everything. They always take 4+ ward save against shooting, its stupid not to. A good chunk chunk of your army will be in that unit.
Either they steamroll whatever they touch...or they get shot to pieces turn two xD
But ya, if your going for Blood Knights. Blood Drinker really helps their survivability.
And i keep my Dreadknight guy in a GG unit. If i put him in my Black Knights they loose the ethereal movment =/
Crown of the damned
Sword of Strife / Ogre Blade
I REALLY like the idea of making him a dreadknight too. I don't know why I've never thought of that, so kudos to BlackDow, but thats the build I typically use. It keeps him cheap enough to still afford another casting lord that features the helm of commandment. I'll swap the sword of strife and ogre blade based on what I'll be facing in that battle. Beasties and knights (dragons, monsterous mounts, ogres, brettonians) get the S7 blade and against just about anything else I'll take +2 attacks. T3 = Hit on 3's with reroll, wound on 2's, with the potential for 6 more attacks comming from the vampire. I always keep him in a unit that has a champion, so the champion can accept any challanges, and the vampire can simply wail on the unit. But if I take that S7, i'll accept challanges almost every time, because even the most armored foes will be hurting at that point.
I like the killing blow setup above, but am very concerend about its survivability. You do state that it wither works or you lose the character, so I'll give you that, I just think its too much of a risk for a lord level character. Try a wight king, additional hand weapon, other trickster's shard, cursed book, dragon helm. Gives him a 4+ AS, hit on 3's in one round, any 6 is a killing blow, and the ward save must be re-rolled. I include the dragon helm to give a slight boost to his armor, but also for the 2++ vs fire. There's alot more flaming attacks running around than there used to be, and that keeps him safe in most situations. Keep a lord with helm of commandment nearby, and you can even drop the book. Gets the same job done for a cheaper price tag.
