Now that new vamps are out and iv decided to build up my force a bit and change my list to suit, my friend has decided to make an ogre force. Now i have always had a bit of trouble with ogres when using vamps because they have alot of attacks, are hard to take down, and also cause fear, not to mentin a generaly good T4. With the new Ogre book making them even better than they were before i was just wondering if there was any sure fire ways to handle them.
I have been looking at a unit of bloodknights in my list anyway but theres only so much one unit can do, and respectively, they are quite frail when compared to a unit of ogres at soaking up any damage. throw in combat res aswell and you know BKs wont be able to take on most ogre units alone.
I have considered playing upon there Ld of 7, using banshees and terrorghiest but your looking at best and maybe popping one ogre per shriek/howl, in the long run not to effective, and i can see my terrorghiest (rare) getting mauled by something stupid like mornfang cavalry.
At the moment the game plan is going to be hope the big blocks of skeletons hold long enough for a unit of 6 varghiests to flank charge.
Was hoping anyone else had some sound tactics for ogres.
A friend of mine has had some success with Terrorgiests and Banshees against the smaller units of ogres such as hunters,Ironguts Mornfangs, Gorgers etc as two to three wounds that bypass their high toughness hurts these units more than bigger blocks of ogre infantry. Varghiests and Crypt Horrors would be playing them at their own game. Poison has always been an ogres weakness for them. otherwise id suggest great weapons across the board.
Yes people i know that my spelling and punctuation is awful but I am product of British teaching pollicies so what can I do about it?
Terrorgheists and Banshees, as mentioned above, will make Ogres very, very unhappy. Another thing that gives them issues is the Lore of Death, particularly the Purple Sun.

I think that a sizable unit of cryptghouls, maybe a horde will do well with their poisoned attacks.
And remember that fear doesn't worry undead, since of fear causing themselves and immune to psych (if those two haven't changed, I can't seem to remember).
May the Dragon of Unhappiness never fly up your bottom.
on the contrary, fear DOES worry undead.
Because of our low weapon skill, we rely on the chance that the enemy will be effected by fear, and need 5's to hit us (or at least not need 3's anymore). When the statment was made that some ogres cause fear, it was not meant to mean that "oh no, we might be afraid of them", but rather as "crap... they will never be afraid of us".
Face an all khorne maurader list and tell me how much fear matters. They have higher initiative, frenzy, flails, only slightly more expensive, and they're never afraid of you. they dont need warriors of chaos of chosen. khorne mauraders with flails decimate undead. true, they're reletively useless after the first round, but then they'll just send the next highly expendable unit in to kill lots of guys.
There are always ways around things when you tailor lists specifically to the enemy you expect to face. So please no "well if that was the case i'd bring nothing but spirit hosts!! LOL" kind of crap. what i'm trying to convey is that the original poster was less concerned about being "afraid" and more concerned that his opponenet would never be "afraid".
Much apologies, didn't mean to cause that much stir, that part of it didn't even cross my mind, though it should have, considering that I play Ogres myself, and we have relatively low weapon skill as well, and so fear helps us.
I probably forgot because I tend to not bother with fear as my main opponent is high elves and tend to pass all the rolls anyway. Or are phoenix guard. Or have immune to psych banner on the swordmasters.

no worries mate. I tend to play High Elves, Dark Elves, or Vampires myself, so fear doesn't mean much to me either. They're either immune or highly unlikely to fail. Given my opponents, i typically depend more on ethereal and 2+ armor save knights to save the day.
Here are a few ideas I thought might be usable against ogres:
Hexwraiths seem quite nice as they can actually hit hard as well as be immune to damage.
Lore of shadow or the cursed book are going to even the odds in a big way.
A combat monster vampire lord will outfight ANYTHING he cares to throw your way.
Nightshroud on a character on a large base (perhaps a coven throne....) is going to cause problems for his great and magical weapon wielding guys, especially when the entire front rank is striking last at a weak strength.
Banshees hidden in big units of zombies, and I mean big like 80-100 models - lets see if he can stomp the whole of that unit over the course of 6 turns!
Ghouls with hellish vigour, danse macarbre, cursed rod are going to be pretty nasty.
Vampire with lore of beasts sig spell can make a big difference to a unit.
Black coach after a couple of rounds is going to be nice.
Vargheists are better then regular ogre units in combat and fast enough to outmanouvre them to pick favourable combats.
Try creating small units of Zombies to use a speedbumps for the Ogres. Things like Vargheists and the Vargulf and or a Terrorgheist can then move into position.
