I have been collecting VC for a while but only been able to start playing recently with some friends and I am having a hard time dealing with High Elves. We play 1000pt games right now to learn the rules and the HE player usually takes a block of 25 spearmen with a hero/lord, two blocks of 15 swordmasters and a great eagle or two. I find that I can't seem to last through combat or keep my general alive very long.
I've tried a few lists, but they sort of fall flat on their faces as soon as I get into combat.
Any pointers would be appreciated.
when it comes to high elves, especially sword masters, taking away the ASF rerolls goes a long way. Sure, sword masters are still going to hurt. A lot. But if you toss a bat swarm in there, or even just have a corpse cart and get its aura thing to activate, you should be well on your way. Ghouls would be a good bet, since he would need 3s to wound instead of 2s, but they're a bit expensive. Alternatively, you can zombie swamp him. You'll be able to put over 3 times as many zombies as he does spearmen, 5x as many zombies per swordmaster. Each sword master will kill 2 zombies a round at best (prior to crumble), so you'd still win that one in the long run.
I would go with necromancers and zombies to combat the swords. Zombies come back fast, and will eventually kill the small block of T3 elves. Hex wraiths would also be a great way to get rid of them. Run through once or twice and the unit is essentially useless against your 40+ man block of zombies.
Ok, that sounds like some good ideas. I tried the bat swarm and corpse cart so far, but I think I need to get better at manouvering them. I like the ghoul and zombie ideas also.
