what is the best possible close combat Vampire Lord Build?
My favourite would be:
Vampire Lord+Armour of Destiny,DawnStone,Enchanted Shield, Dragonhelm,Red Fury,Seed of Rebirth and, if necessary, quickblood, The othe tricksters shard.
But the guy's already I7...
So you end up with: 2+ Armour, Reroll Fails, 4+ Ward, 6+ Regen. (5+ Mortis Engine). 370
But personally I use him mounted with this stuff:
Vampire Lord+DawnStone,Enchanted Shield,Red Fury,Seed of Rebirth, Barded Nightmare, Armour of Destiny, lance ,The othe tricksters shard-409
So now its: 1+ Reroll, 4+ Ward & 6+ Regen. On the charge, 5 S7 attacks which can generate more.
really doesn't matter between the two, since they're both illegal. Can't have two magic armors boss. armor of destiny OR enchanted shield/dragon helm. That said, i don't think a super expensive guy is always the best way to go. Just because he has 100 points of items doesn't mean he's the "best" combat lord. The "best" would be the one where you get the biggest punch for the cheapest points, and thus the most effect. you can be the "best" guy out there, but if you get toyed around by a hand full of eagles all game you're just a 400+ point sink. A combo I like to use is as follows: talisman of preservation, heavy armor, shield, lance, barded nightmare, red fury, quickblood. Might not be the "best" out there, but i have a lot of success with it. and it only requires one magic item. even the talisman i might consider getting rid of. Most of the time the 2+ is good enough, i only put the 4++ because he's usually the general and every little bit helps. But in all seriousness, if the 7-10 attacks that hit on 3's (with rerolls) at S7 aren't enough to kill what i charged, i put him in the wrong place anyway.
Honestly, I have to say you've got a point. And I didnt know about the magic armour stuff cause I thought hes wearing the magic armour, got a cool helm and an enchanted shield. That kind of sucks, but oh well... Thanks anyway.
Yeah rule is only one Magical Armour so you can no longer use a Shield and a Piece of Armour to go with it. So one or the other. I like to take the enchanted shield with Heavy armour though and the 5+ ward save works pretty good.
I find Stirgoi Ghoul King with Red Fury and Sword of Bloodshed works well. Add assorted minor items for flavour.
The careful application of terror is a form of communication in itself - Zutta Law #4.
If your going ghoul king the dragonbane gem is a must have. As cheap as it comes and he'll have a save against everything besides killing blow and things that never allow saves.
As far as vampire lord goes, I go with:
Red Fury, Quickblood, Dreadknight
Ogreblade, Nightshroud, Other Trickster's Shard
Heavy armor, shield, barded nightmare.
He sports a 1+ armor save and nobody gets strength bonuses from their weapons, so usually he'll have a 3+ or a 4+ against particularly nasty opponents. You just have to be careful, knowing that you must challenge and that you have no ward against killingblow or units that straight up ignore armor. That being said, I've carved through every character I've gone up against before they get to attack. Not unkillable but he works for me.
Most Notable Achievements:
Killed a Revenant Titan in one shot.
Killed 900 pts worth of Blood Angels in 2 turns while only loosing 4 pts.
I really like the mortis engine so I take him tooled up as:
Giant sword (+3 strength)
Seed of rebirth (5+ regen)
dragonhelm (+1 armor/ 2++ vs flaming attacks)
Other trickster's shard (reroll ward saves)
Sure, he has to challenge, but that just keeps him alive longer as he isnt the most survivable and he will destroy anyone he faces with 5 str8 attacks and red fury. He makes for good times.
For a Vampire Lord, I favor the following:
Vampire Lord, Heavy Armor, Ogre Blade, Quickblood, Red Fury, Shield, Talisman of Preservation, The Other Trickster's Shard
The defenses are decent at a 4+/4++, and with S7 and re-roll Ward saves, he'll crack most things - you also have 20 points of Vampiric powers to play with and tweak things. On a Strigoi Ghoul King, the kit I like is as follows:
Strigoi Ghoul King, Dragonbane Gem, Potion of Strength, Red Fury, Sword of Bloodshed
Not quite the same level of attention to defense, but oh, the murderous damage. 8 attacks at S5 with the option to crank up to S8 if you run into something tough will rip right through most things. Things like Quickblood to hose High Elves and certain characters are nice, but not necessary, so they're not in there by default.

You see the Red Fury/Quickblood/Magic Sword combination everywhere. That's usually a sign.
Hard to Hit Vampire Lord
Aura of Dark Majesty
Talisman of Endurance
all for just under 350 points
This lord is very hard to hit. Challenge a model in base contact. If Beguile is successful (-4 ld test because of AoDM) then most enemies will need to reroll all successful hits and will prob need a six to do so (WS 10 with a minus 1 to hit because of glittering scales). Now I have added Dread knight, as I was not sure whether this would increase WS to 12 If so then even better if not then just, remove it. Now this Vamp is not as killy as the others here are but I thought that it would be annoying for enemies in combat. I imagined a vamp that just disappears from enemies attacks and reappears behind them too fast to hit just like in the movies It has a little ward save for lucky hits.
