Should you ever field zombies in a 10-wide formation?
The more I think about it, the less I think you should. The only benefit is a third rank hitting, and that's weak zombies. But it allows more attackers which means more zombies destroyed and worse combat results. I think no, there's never a good reason to put zombies in a horde.
I asked a Skaven player why he didn't field clanrats or slaves in hordes. He said he would have to bring 80 of them. I think the same applies to zombies.
agreed, the less you field in the front rank the better. I do however want to bring a unit of 99 zombies with my vampire lord, good luck killing enough zombies before my vampire eats your face lol but really I still need to paint the 60 zombies I do have.
If your army is bunched up, a horde of zombies at the front of the advance are great at holding up units you don't want getting near your damage dealers. You should take at least 60 minimum but the more the better, stick a vampire in there and keep summoning, then it gets good after a turn or two and you will as a bonus get some kills out of it, but killing is not their main job. This is a good choice in large games 1750+
2 units of 5 wide blocks of 40 though with focused summoning however is a better alternative if your army is spread out and this is a better choice in General
TipIf you are ever planning on using a LOT of zombies and don't want to spend stupid money, buy one box of GW zombies and use them as your front ranks. Then buy Mantic zombies to fill the rest of the unit. You can get 60 for £35
